Dunking fabric
Description
Sculptor Pete Laster demonstrates how to make solid sculptures from fabric and plaster. He shows a piece of his own work made by dunking a piece of fabric into plaster, laying it over another object and leaving it to harden. He then demonstrates this technique and shows how a finished piece can be mounted as a free-standing sculpture.
Classroom Ideas
This is a useful introduction to sculpture and a good example of how other artists experiment. Students could experiment with the technique shown, using different fabrics draped around different objects. They could look at how different ways of placing the fabric (such as throwing, twisting, pulling) can result in different forms. They can then go on to try using these forms to express different themes or emotions.
