Image cropping

Description

A Bitesize guide to cropping images for design work.

Classroom Ideas

Students could choose an image from a selection and experiment with cropping to produce different compositions. They could work on a computer graphics program, or with physical images and tools. They could either work to a simple brief of producing the best image to frame and display, or be given a more specific brief, where they have to produce an image of a certain proportion, such as 4x3 or 16x9. The idea of composing images using ratios, including the ‘rule of thirds’ discussed could be explored in more detail and related to maths and numeracy. For a more complex exercise, they could be given an image with accompanying title and text which they have to put together for a magazine article, poster ad or book jacket.
