Book cover illustrations

Description

This is an overview of the process behind designing the ‘Ptolemy’s Gate’ children’s book cover. Author Jonathan Stroud and publisher Annie Eaton set a brief for illustrator David Wyatt. He talks about how observation and using a range of techniques is integral to his work and to develop ideas. Sketches, research, photographs and the use of ICT help him to realise the brief and reflect upon changes along the journey.

Classroom Ideas

Students could experiment with digital cameras, scanners and picture editing software to design a book cover of their own. They could be presented with a basic design brief that explains the content of the book, its genre and target market which they have to base their decisions around. The clip could be used as a stimulus for a discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of using computers to create art. Students could experiment with different methods of working creatively with computers and other technology. A good starting point would be the works that David Hockney has created directly on a tablet.
