Set and costume design
Description
Set and costume designer Bob Crawley describes his route into this job and explains what first caught his interest in terms of design and talks about the skills and qualities required in the job. He cites curiosity as perhaps more important than technical skills, as a stage designer needs a keen interest in researching all kinds of contexts and historical eras. There are glimpses of the set of âAliceâs Adventures In Wonderlandâ in construction, including the Cheshire Cat, a three dimensional version of the original illustration.
Classroom Ideas
Students could be set a challenge of designing sets or costumes for a particular production. They should carry out research into the chosen text or piece, looking at how previous productions have been designed and commenting on those they feel have been more successful. Students should then decide what feel or look they are after before focusing on a particular scene or character, producing worked through ideas for this particular aspect of the piece. As well as looking good, students need to consider how the set or costume they have chosen relate to the required action and movement of the actors.
