Colour mixing
Description
Artist Julie Bennett demonstrates how to use a paint palette made up with two blues, two yellows and two reds. She explains how mixing two primary colours together will create secondary colours, thereby creating the colour wheel. She shows how mixing the opposite colours on the wheel (complementary colours) will mute the resulting colours and demonstrates how the three primary colours mixed together can make black.
Classroom Ideas
Discuss colour theory and the colour wheel before asking students to create their own colour wheels by mixing together primary colours. Once a basic wheel has been created, some students could go on to experiment with changing the tone of their colours, either by adding black or white, or by adding complementary colours. Students could experiment with using a limited colour palette in a still life or other composition. They should build an awareness of how light and reflection can change colours and bring them together.
