Focus
Description
Photographer Kim Shalet describes how to use autofocus and manual focus to shoot subjects in different ways. She selects autofocus to capture areas of interest sharply and manual focus to allow blurring for a more creative effect. She demonstrates both types of focus in the studio by shooting a model and talking through her technique.
Classroom Ideas
Ask students to research and present on examples which feature different focus effects. The class should then discuss these in terms of how they were achieved and what ideas or themes the different effects convey. They could then create a series of snaps that portray the same composition in different ways, ideally linked to some of the themes they have discussed.
