Cycling in Amsterdam

Description

A look at why many people in Amsterdam choose to cycle instead of using other forms of transport. Far more children cycle to school in Amsterdam than in the whole of Scotland. This report shows how the city’s infrastructure has been designed to be cycle-friendly, with cycle lanes and communal bike racks being commonplace.

Classroom Ideas

This clip could be used to illustrate how cycling is far more common in Amsterdam than it is in many other cities. Through discussion, students could investigate the reasons for this by comparing Amsterdam with their own local area or another major city in Scotland, such as Edinburgh.

Students could explore how their local area could be made more cycle friendly. Could cycle lanes be added to some roads? Could bike racks be installed in some key places? Students could write persuasive letters to their local councillor asking for their support in promoting cycling.
