Learning to cycle safely

Description

In this clip, pupils practice cycling in the school playground before progressing to quiet, local roads. They learn to ride their bikes in the safest road position - not too close to the gutter or too far out in the road. Signalling safely skills, checking for traffic, identifying road hazards such as speed bumps, and the importance of the ‘lifesaver look’ are also worked on.

Classroom Ideas

Students could be asked to recap the cycle safety rules for cycling on the road as presented in this clip. They could consider why each of the steps presented is important and must be carried out. What are the possible consequences if these precautions are ignored? Students could design posters to display around the school, reminding students in other classes about these important rules. Alternatively, students could prepare and present their own assembly to teach others about cycle safety.

Students could also explore road signs which are important for cyclists to take note of. They could look at a range of road signs and discuss what they think these might mean. Their real meaning should be revealed and students could discuss what action, if any, is necessary when they see these signs. Students could then create their own road sign quiz to challenge classmates.
