Cycling safety - choosing a bike and helmet

Description

In this clip, the presenter goes to buy a bike for an up and coming race. A bike shop assistant guides him through various styles suited to different terrains. She stresses the importance of always wearing a cycle helmet and helps him choose an appropriate one, along with protective and high visibility clothing.

Classroom Ideas

Students could use this clip as stimulus to explore what equipment is needed to ensure safe cycling. They could be asked to draw a picture of themselves cycling, or be given an outline of a person on a bike. Students could then add the required safety equipment to their drawing, including a helmet, appropriate clothing and lights. These drawings could also be annotated with notes on safety checks that should be carried out on a bike before cycling, such as checking the tyre pressure and the brakes. Students could use these drawings to create bike safety posters.
