Line graphs, bar charts, pie charts, climate graphs and pictograms can all be used to present geographical information. It is important to know how to extract and interpret the most useful information from these.

Climate graphs

Bar charts and line graphs can be combined. Climate graphs are an example of this.

The x-axis shows the months of the year and there are two y-axes to show average temperature and total rainfall (also known as precipitation). The temperature is shown as a line and the rainfall as bars.

When describing a climate graph, you should include: -

  • The highest and lowest rainfall figures and the month they occurred.
  • The total annual rainfall.
  • The average rainfall.
  • The highest and lowest temperature figures and the month they occurred.
  • The temperature range.
  • The average yearly temperature.
