Maps
Maps are representations of the world created by experts called cartographers to help other people navigate different places.
Maps contain information tailored to a specific purpose.
- The maps found in a geographical atlas will contain information such as how the land is used, the population density and the political boundaries that exist between regions, states and nations.
- Tourist maps help visitors to find their way about, for example theme parks, zoos and shopping centres.
- Ordnance Survey (OS) maps are often used by hillwalkers and tourists – and you will have to navigate them in your National 5 Geography exam.
Geographers have traditionally used maps as a source of information about places. We can now use a range of technology to help us find places, eg satellite navigation, Global Positioning System. These pinpoint an exact location on the globe according to lines of latitude and longitude. and Electronic maps with layers added to display information about the area. on our computers or mobile phones.
