Dizzy Gillespie is one of the most famous, recognisable and greatest trumpeters of all time. He is most commonly associated with the style of jazz and used Latin American rhythms in his work, including one of his most famous pieces Manteca, long before working with Machito. His distinctive playing style and trumpet have made him an instantly recognisable icon of jazz music.

Machito - Franciso Grillo - was a Cuban singer and percussionist who formed a band in New York during the 1940s called the Afro-Cubans. Machito enhanced the popular jazz styles of the time by adding a Cuban influence to the sound.

Dizzy Gillespie and Machito were assisted by Cuban and Chico O’Farrill, who wrote and arranged the music for the album Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods. Chico O’Farrill had previously worked with Machito and Gillespie in 1950 on the Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite record.
