Derby secured their fifth-straight win to beat Preston and go seventh in the table, a point behind sixth-placed Cardiff, thanks to Wayne Rooney's free-kick.

But with the Rams playing the top four in their final six games, starting with Saturday's East Midlands derby against Nottingham Forest, boss Philip Cocu knows they have plenty of work to do to extend their season.

“It was a great goal by Wayne, it was just a pity we couldn’t score the second one," said Cocu.

“But in the end I think we played in some periods of the game really good football, and we showed character at the end when we needed it to defend well.

“We have many more challenges to face, playing a lot of top teams in the table. So we cannot be too satisfied. We are heading in the right direction but we are not there yet.”

Birmingham conceded three times for their fourth successive home game as they were beaten 3-0 by Huddersfield.

Blues twice came from behind to draw 3-3 with Hull on Saturday and are seven points above the relegation zone with six games to play.

Head coach Pep Clotet, who is leaving at the end of the season, conceded that his side must improve.

"As a team we needed a strong start. We had chances but they didn’t go in. And we defended softly. We didn't like the game or the result," he told ±«Óătv Sport. "We have to put our hands up and take it as a bad game. That’s what it was. Huddersfield were better than us in most things. "We have to bounce back and look at trying get three points on Saturday. I have a good relationship with all the players, I respect them and trust them 100%. The team are fully focused. It's not like they are not trying. The team are fully focused. They have a desire."

Earlier this evening Huddersfield Town climbed out of the Championship relegation zone with a comprehensive victory at Birmingham.

The win lifted the Terriers three points clear of danger but manager Danny Cowley said they still had plenty of work to do to beat the drop.

"It was an important win and a good performance but it doesn’t make us a good team," Cowley told ±«Óătv Sport. "A good team produces consistently and there will be no over-celebrating.

"We’ve had a lot of criticism, most of it being fair, but when you are in a difficult moment you learn a lot about yourself. It is easy to stand tall when things are going well."
