CATH OLDMAN: is the second child of Gracie and Tiger Braden. A lot fell on Cath's shoulders when her older sister, Alice escaped by marrying young, but lost her husband in the war when she found religion. When Cath was 11 her father started sexually abusing her. This she kept quiet about for fear of the consequences, especially for her mum, but it continued right up to her marriage, of which her father didn't approve, considering Joey an ineffectual foreign specimen, which only endeared Cath to him more. She never forgave her father and often thought about killing him. Only when he turned his attention to her son did she get there. Fortune smiled on her following his killing, for the coal yard where it occurred during an air-raid later took a direct hit from a doodlebug, blowing the body to bits.

Cath knew her pregnancy wasn't the result of intercourse with Joey, but she saw marriage to him as the means of getting free of her father, even though Joey couldn't stand up to the ex-boxer. As Joey prospered Cath became the force behind him, challenging him to reach further, and having few if any scruples about what they do to get money. This is what drives their relationship, along with increasing their social position.
