Your Story: My Granda at the age of 21

I got £22 per week wages. Men got paid more than women, mainly because they were the main workers.

I thought the wages were fair with other workmen. The best thing about the job was working with other people and the variety of work. I spent most of my money on going out and I saved some.

I walked to work because it wasn't that far to go. At work I had sandwiches or soup, but I sometimes went to the pub or canteen. The work at the depot carried out all repairs to council houses, schools, and roads in the area. They also looked after the street lighting.
