Verity Murphy | 13:05 UK time, Tuesday, 24 May 2011

Coming up on tonight's programme:

President Barack Obama has met Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace at the start of his state visit to Britain. Later he will have a brief meeting with Prime Minister David Cameron, although their more substantive talks are scheduled for Wednesday.

Tonight Mark Urban look at what will be topping the agenda at those talks and what both leaders will be hoping to achieve in them.

Peter Marshall is focussed on Glencore which floated on the stock exchange today. He will be telling us more about this vast company - the world's largest diversified commodities trader - what it does and how it works.

The ongoing fight by local communities to save their libraries will be shown in force tonight at Kensal Green, with writer Alan Bennett leading the charge. Stephen Smith is off to meet him.

And we have an interview with porn baron Larry Flynt who will be talking about the connection between power and sex outlined in his new book One Nation Under Sex, a history of political sex scandals.

'ABC Radio reported that Glencore "has been accused of illegal dealings with rogue states: apartheid South Africa, USSR, Iran, and Iraq under Saddam Hussein", and has a "history of busting UN embargoes to profit from corrupt or despotic regimes". Specifically, Glencore was reported to have been named by the CIA to have paid USD 3,222,780 in illegal kickbacks to obtain oil in the course of the UN oil-for-food programme for Iraq. The company denied these charges, according to the CIA report quoted by ABC.'

International commodities trader Marc Rich was the founder of Glencore (very 'Rich' apparently!).

'Marc Rich (born December 18, 1934) is an international commodities trader. He was indicted in the United States on federal charges of illegally making oil deals with Iran during the late 1970s-early 1980s Iran hostage crisis and tax evasion. He was in Switzerland at the time of the indictment and has never returned to the U.S.
He subsequently received a presidential pardon from U.S. President Bill Clinton on January 20, 2001, Clinton's last day in office.'

ODD COVE THAT OBAMA - COULDN'T BE DEVIOUS COULD HE?

I have, twice, heard Obama expounding on solving the Middle East (and did he not affront Netanyahu with his talk of 1987 borders?)

BUT: on both occasions, Barny O'Barma gave EXAMPLES of the terrible things Palestinians do to Israelis, BUT NONE THE OTHER WAY. Just a slip eh.

Now we wave a Union Flag at Queen Elizabeth. Anyone know why?

    'Bibi' Votes Republican

‘Undeniably, Netanyahu won the smack-down. The president was humiliated in the Oval Office, and in his trip to AIPAC's woodshed he spoke of the future peace negotiations ending just as Israelis desire and demand.’

“Keep Your Government Hands Off My Medicare!”—Healthcare Reform As An Interracial Wealth Transfer Program

‘Obamacare cut funding from programs that overwhelmingly benefit older white people who have worked their whole life and paid into the system, in order to fund programs that overwhelmingly benefit minorities, many of whom never worked in their life, including immigrants and illegal aliens. ‘

Meanwhile a young fella in Housten Texas has hundreds and hundereds of posts a day and all he's got is a web page with little theme other than current news. What I wonder is the Beeb been doing wrong with their blogs...

OTHER KINDS OF WORD ARE AVAILABLE

Yesterday's mid-day news, reported that a police officer had been charged, regarding the death Mr Tomlinson, after a 'CONFRONTATION'! What I saw looked more like a BACKTOFRONTATION!

I think it's all too late NN, you were worrying about libraries last night, but it's all part of the greater plan to stop the english being english.

    Here's another

What fun any old teacher from around the world, eventually, can teach an english kid, after all we don't have an identity or a culture that is english anymore do we?

#18 Good point Barrie. I thought it was regarded as very cowardly to "shot a man in the back".

It's not going to affect Gove kids is it Lizzy!

I must find a stronger word than 'perversity' - this beggars belief! But then - to MPs under the Westminster Ethos - it is just a game. Played well or badly, THEY still eat well, and keep warm and dry.

    the farce of protocol

given the uk head of state is represented by a mindset that discriminates, is anti human rights and equality that is designed to create an apartheid of 'common' people why is the uk seen as a force for good? Never mind other regimes do we not need liberation from the norman monarchy occupation?

    missing you already.

essential relationship for whom? more like a useful relationship for the usa . given the choice between uk and israel the usa would bomb the uk first [as happened in ireland]

    child abuse?

it would be cheaper to just give the 'poor kids' a computer? libraries these days have mobile phones and personal stereo noise.

big society is a political label. its not neutral. NN have never mentioned hayek nor the implication nor the evidence of where it leads.

THE WAFFLE OBLYMPICS (O'Bas and Dave, backed by 'The Helicopters')

O'BAS: "Can't let Gaddafi send in a bunch of thugs to murder innocent civilians". Only so many to go round eh?

DAVE: "MY Deputy Prime Minister". Hang on Dave - you didn't APPOINT him. Was that another snub on the way to a snap election?

BOTH: From their use of words, I deduce Palestine is an UNREASONABLE AGGRESSOR, while Israel is a REASONABLE 'LAND-OWNER'.

O'BAS: 'Fix the boundaries of the TWO STATES first, and sort out Jerusalem last.'
Er - are they not INEXORABLY INTERTWINED? I'll get me coat.
Also, rockets it seems, are heinous; phosphorous is - well - unnoticed - and UN Resolutions make good drawer liners . . .

It's just a game to them.

very sad to hear the applause ring around the White House for the Nethanyahu speech a speech that makes peace in the middle east twice as difficult and as far away as ever.......

#23 I found the comments interesting under this article Barrie.

One was a teacher, he/she said it is to break the unions, now where have I heard that before?! If the british teachers go on strike they will have a new (foreign, english speaking) group to take over the schools. That will force back the union, lower teachers wages, cut their pension arrangements, make them full time nursemaids for the children of the workers etc.

I should think totally demoralising for the british teachers as well, they already have so many things they cannot do to bring discipline into schools, and as for education, it changes every day without fail.

I heard of some more free schools the other day, one wants to take most of it's classes out of doors, why? And another wants to only speak in another language other than english, move divide and rule I reckon. You might like them! ;-)

HOW DOES HE KEEP A STRAIGHT FACE?

Paddy O'Bummer says that 'they' fight dirty so we have to OBEY THE RULES.

I suppose Guantanamo is outside US territory, in the way leper colonies were isolated, so that evil does not contaminate good.

    Terror hates Freedom, you know.

Is this all a bad dream?

  • Comment number 29.

their is not a racist or anti semitic bone in my body, but when i see what israel has done in the so called war in Gaza it makes my blood boil. then you get israeli PM
netanyahu making a partisan and biased speech.to congress and getting a standing ovation. it makes you wonder what you have missed. congress should be shown the shelling of Gaza.and the banned substances being used against people and innocent children.we have to remember the holocaust, but turn a blind eye to Gaza, where is the justice, is this why we are in conflict with Libya.

TRUTH IS NOW TO WESTERN GOVERNANCE AS LIGHT TO THE DEVIL'S OWN (#29)

There is sooooo much more that they choose not to know, rouser.

The reality of 9/11, when it emerges, would kill them if they were normal people. It is going to make a classic 'study'. Bush, Blair and Obama will pretend they had no knowledge - it will be 'fool or knave' writ large. As for Campbell, IDS et al, and those elected ones the poor Americans rely on to run their lives, the sight will be pitiful.

But I have predicted a nuclear incident, coincident with ultimate realisation (and probably consequential 'suspension' of normal governance) while 'Terror' is hunted down - again. And any mention of 9/11 will be unpatriotic - again.

do you notice in the Libya conflict, killing of gaddafi is illegal as is regime change."guff"
the same applied in Iraq with saddam, "piffle". the penny must eventually drop. this is designed so the victors can share the spoils. and the same thing apply to them.
its beyond comprehension. but as in Iraq and afghanistan the wests chosen leaders
are elected to create regime change!

bomb the hell out of Libya and leave Syria alone...now why is that? Er, it will come to me in a minute, er,

  • Comment number 34.

its time the arab league and israel got together in talks on how to end the unrest in the middle east as it concerns them more than the west up to now israel has been an island in the middle east backed by the west particularly the USA who supplies them with weapons which they have used in the seven day war and more recently in lebanon and the Gaza strip. they owe there existence to superior fire power, but in the future with new government likely form to enter discussions with the arab league and governments concerned might be to everyone's advantage
