Sarah McDermott | 17:21 UK time, Wednesday, 25 May 2011

Barack Obama and David Cameron have said Colonel Gaddafi will ultimately be forced out of power and Libya's people allowed to "choose their own future". At a joint press conference in London, the UK prime minister vowed to "turn up the heat" on the regime in Tripoli amid suggestions of deadlock on the ground. Tonight Mark Urban considers what the diplomatic strategy for Libya is now.

Jeremy has been to meet the former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. . See that interview in full later.

As the coalition appoints pro-abstinence charity Life to an advisory group on sexual health, we'll debate if the government's Christian moral approach to sex education and abortion is a good thing or not.

And Stephen Smith dons his scarlet matador's cape and travels to Spain where the Catalan parliament has banned the country's most emblematic pastime. Stephen finds that though the bullfighting ban has brought relief to animal rights activists, people are deeply concerned that an important part of the culture and tradition of Spain's nationalist heartlandÌęwill be lost.

Do join Jeremy at 2230 on ±«Óătv Two.

    OBAMA’S WESTMINSTER HALL SPEECH

Obama declared that “nations prosper when they ALLOW women and girls to REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL”. By implication (from another part of the speech) this is when women and girls are ALLOWED to discover the delights of jobs, industry, entrepreneurship, science, technology, institutional learning, industrial medicine and banking. The ‘most powerful man in the world’, has neither time nor tongue (nor yet vision) for the MOTHERING of a stable next generation, such as ‘the savages’ attempt to achieve.

Obama said we must ‘confront evil’; it is OUR responsibility. We must proceed with humility and not fail – FOR WHO IS THERE TO TAKE OUR PLACE! (There’s humble.) I say (mindful that all men are equal) deliberate destruction of mothering is an evil UNPARALLELED.

Obama observed that America and Britain have shared values: the grandson of an army cook is President, and the privileged son of a toff bloodline, is Prime Minister; anyone can be an American if they acknowledge the flag, and anyone can be British if they sing God Save the Queen (apparently). To be monarch, of course, is – well – not possible. It’s a blood thing.

Who is this man? He seems to lack the wisdom required for such a high position.

    YES HE DID?

Does this answer my question @ post #1?

  • Comment number 3.

Stephen Smith is in Spain where there are mass Egypt style protests over mass unemployment and zero confidence in politicians and he is covering bull fighting

    like I said laughable
    absolutely laughable !

"Jeremy asks him if he was surprised that the Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was found living inside Pakistan."

    Mean while on planet earth.....

  • Comment number 4.

I'm pretty sure that there is archive footage of Musharraf stating that Bin Laden was dead when he was the president of Pakistan, likewise Benazir Bhutto just before she was assassinated ?

  • Comment number 5.

:o) Look forward to Jeremy's interview tonight!
    Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia......

HOLLYWOOD IS AMERICA - AMERICA IS HOLLYWOOD

Not my idea, but telling. All America's dodgy 'incidents' have a 'bad movie' feel about them. How droll that Obama used a similar idiom, commenting on the toast mix-up.

The thing about Hollywood is that one needs-must SUSPEND DISBELIEF. (After 9/11 Obama INSTRUCTED us all NOT TO QUESTION.) There is a clear pattern of badly managed pretence here - like the hide-and-seek child with his bum in full view.

I am constantly amazed at how many sleepwalking individual there are among us. But then. St Tony never said 'Education X 3' was about becoming competent, only about passing multiple-choice, DUMBED DOWN exams.

I appear to have talked myself into a hole. . .

"As the coalition appoints pro-abstinence charity Life to an advisory group on sexual health, we'll debate if the government's Christian moral approach to sex education and abortion is a good thing or not."

considering control of women's sexual freedom is also part of Islam and Hinduism, amongst others, not only will the Islamophobes probably join in, but surely a better question would be: "As the coalition appoints pro-abstinence charity Life to an advisory group on sexual health, we'll debate if the government's Religious approach to sex education and abortion is a good thing or not in an avowedly modern and secular society."?

"Barack Obama and David Cameron have said Colonel Gaddafi will ultimately be forced out of power and Libya's people allowed to "choose their own future"."

But presumably they will only be "allowed" to choose political leaders the Western Powers approve of. No 'Hamas', no liberal reformers, just Karzai-style corrupt autocrats militarily supported by an occupation force. I wonder why the US is allowing France and the UK to continue to destroy Western credibility in the Arab world? O perhaps the US leadership is pleased to have 'junior partners' it can blame later when something goes wrong, to spread the [bleep] around from the carnage in Iraq and Afghanistan.

what really cracks me up is this bush-era perception of France as some pinko-liberal State, when it is makes even the UK look good when compared to France's international record.

did you hear the MP on radio 4's PM programme this pm describing Obama as a 'superstar'....and he then went on to say actually 'shook my hand'.

Obama and another John Craven News report:

Good theater and all helped along by the British Broadcasting corporation.
Enjoyed the Mark Mardells cheerleading dance on the 10 oclock news..again!
Yeah Mark, we all love Obama.
Something tells me though, others are way-ahead of whats really happening behind the curtains.

THERE WERE GIANTS IN THE LAND IN THOSE DAYS (#10)

    Sadly - yes.

I wonder Obama's pauses are prompted on the autocue? (Apparently Eric Sykes put all Frankie Howerd's 'ooh - what - ay - yes' into his scripts.)

I became 'sick of the Pausey' listening to this Messiah.

Outstanding interview by Jeremy with Musharraf :o)
ÂŁ350million a year from the British taxpayer - it certainly IS blackmail.......not to mention the ÂŁ650million recently "donated." When will British taxpayers money actually be used on the British taxpayers?
Also excellent debate with Frum & Cowpers-Coles too.

The Liberal sneer was very much on show this evening. The Tory MP did well to keep her composure against this usual nasty lib reaction and tactic. This was basically a pro abortionist up against a pro-lifer.

Liberalism is a mental disorder...you can see it in their eyes.

Barack Obama visit to Britain. STOP. Lot of publicity opportunities for forthcoming election campaign. STOP. UK media will lap it up. Platitudes about 'special' 'essential' relationship. STOP. Cameron and friends will love it. STOP. Queen and co probably a bit stuffy. Nice lady. STOP. Get pics with Prince and Princess Cambridge. Folks back home will love it. Bon Voyage. STOP
    Presidential Election Campaign.

Another one for further consideration but the question is how far further ?

"Credit default swaps on sovereign debt are fake insurance."

"Their (CDS's) real function is to provide a market for banks and hedge fund to gamble on the likelihood of national defaults. It’s that simple."

Now do you (Newsnighty) get why I say you need to redefine 'bail-out' in the context of naked unlimited unregulated credit default swaps on Sovereign States?

This is the most serious (apart from natural disaster and a nuke war) totally avoidable disaster, for moi its tantamount to vast criminal behaviour and dereliction of moral duty to humanity not to ban these financial instruments on sovereign debt. But no we have Euro and One World Globalists - members of the Trilateral Commission (one of whom is Lord Patton Chairman of the ±«Óătv Trust ) who have realised these instruments aid their globalist new world order intentions. How charming .

Vince speaks of the problem in nuke terms - he is absolutely correct .

just watched President Obama's Speech to Parliament. It's a tough old world in places, but where Obama's speech today was heard, across the Middle East and poorer populations of the world, tonight he could have walked without guards even in the most normally anti-American places and been welcomed.

That is an achievement no American president has managed for over a generation, if not longer.

Magnificent presentation, and whilst it would have been very strange the election would not have been in the President's mind, such shallow considerations pale besides the breadth of vision he displayed within his speech.

yes, we now have to wait to see the truth of the policies, but he certainly did this: he brought us hope.

thank you, AMERICAN President Obama. ♄

    ASYMMETRICAL WARFARE

The Today Program touched (briefly) on 'honour' in warfare (chivalry).

We often hear of asymmetry in Afghanistan: bold, open patrolling by our heroes, at risk of sneaky IEDs, laid by dastardly Johnnie Foreigner. But when such a patrol comes under 'orthodox' fire, do they not call in an ASYMMETRICAL air strike?

comical how monarchists dress monarchy apartheid discrimination up as a good [even healthy] mindset and continue to praise the norman monarchy occupation of these islands refusing even the glimmer of democracy or representative institutions.

Liberalism IS a mental disorder...and should be approached only with care.
Celebrity overload in action. The messiah walks on water ...for some.
Are we going to see more telelpromter Obama today; the accidental president with a community activist staple gun?
Why can't newsnight investigate who pulls his strings. We know Wall St has him mostly, with Soros having a couple to pull on. Maybe Mark Mardell could investigate who pulls the other strings of this marionette president-with-a Marxist-leninist-bent.

Our own unemployment in the millions, the infrastructure breaking down, and still we let a quarter of million more people move in here to seek work and houses every year! And of course it's actually around half a million, if you take into accout the brits that leave. 19% of us now foreign, another 20 years and there won't be hardly an english person in sight.

    DE MOCK CRASS Y (#25)

I presume Obama has all avenues to his impeachment already blocked kev.

I am rapidly reaching the point where I must 'call out' my MP (who recently 'dismissed' my Liar-Flyer concern; unilaterally declaring correspondence closed). As things stand, my only recourse appears to be 'slanderous' or 'libellous' comment, with a cast iron defence of 'fair comment'. No political office, and no branch of media, and no politician (save one) will address the fact of the 2010 election having been WON ON A CONSERVATIVE LIE. Westminster, The Conservative Party, and my MP, by their refusal to engage with the issue (compounded by silence) highlight a crass Westminster mentality that mocks democracy.

And we, the people, put up with it. Lizzy (and Enoch) are right: “We must be mad, literally MAD.”

i will beware charming people in the future.

an Arab Spring has turned into a Turbulent Summer,
the future is open to those who want better, everywhere,
rejecting fake "Purity", accepting honest compromises,
the order of Peace brought by the chaos of democracy,
Life evolving, surviving, at the crux of Chaos and Order.

democracy does not spring from Law and Order,
it does not develop as a tech like in the game Civilisation,
it has rarely been taught by troops,
it is not an invention by modernist Britain and US.

cooperation is the normal state of affairs between individuals who need each other.
equality is the best source of cooperation. Democracy is the anarchic interchange between individuals with equality. The poetry here is in the reality, not the words.

a Society should always look at itself, at how it is behaving itself, just as a social scientist or psychologist, to see how they are affecting those they study. Why are injunctions being applied for? To protect PEOPLE from the predations of the press. We criticise the courts, and the individuals, but who is it causing the problem in the first place?

Likewise, this Govt constantly telling us "Britain is Broken", then going on to break it even more. Big Brother as a model of our society? Constant surveillance, even without the permission of those spied upon? New wars?

privacy, and the right to a good life, should perhaps not rely upon the (as revealed) flawed system of Injunctions.

what is the most dangerous course for a Charismatic? To pursue
an anti-Charismatic pathway. Projection, is always a dangerous thing to actively seek, as Reality/Irreality cuts in. Would you turn down Venus for the universe?

    I would not.
