WHAT ARE YOU DOING TONIGHT ?

Chris Evans | 08:39 UK time, Friday, 6 October 2006

Always a great question , from someone you like that is. This is because they’re obviously about to invite you somewhere.

I was having a drink with a pal last night and it got to eight o’clock and then he says,

“What are you doing for the rest of the night?”

“I’m off home for a bit of Extras and Question Time.”

“Do you want to come to a gig?”

“…er ok, sure why not.”

“Brilliant, I’ve got a spare ticket, we need to leave in the next half hour, is that alright.”

”Yes, that’s fine, who are we going to see by the way?”…

…Oh Babyshambles, Pete Doherty's band”

Well it doesn’t get much more random than that. One second I’m in an old man’s pub, having a pint and a bag of crisps, the next I’m at The Brixton Academy with a large brandy and coke surrounded by 3000 of the sweatiest, most excited eighteen year olds one could ever imagine. Jees, it was hot in there. But oh what fun.

Every bar was ten to twenty deep, life long friendships were being forged as strangers met queuing for their poison.

“Have you seen him before?” one kid asked me.

“No, no I haven’t.”

“Last time I saw him, he was off his nut, still at least he turned up though, do you think he’ll turn up tonight?”

“Well yes I presume so.”

”Oh no you don’t understand, that’s part of the fun of coming to one of his gigs, none of us know if he’s going to show, it’s really cool if you get a ticket for a gig when he doesn’t. You can say I was there.”

This was a new one on me, hilarious!

A young girl says to me.

“So did you like him better in The Libertines or now he’s with Shambles?”

“Oh, definitely Libertines,” I guessed.

“You are so right, I’ve got The Tines tattooed on my back, do you have any tattoos?”

“Er, no, no, I don’t actually.”

“Would you ever have one?”

“May be later,” she seemed quite happy with that.

Half way through the gig another girl comes up. She was really sweaty. like she'd just had a shower with all her clothes on.

“Hey man I’ve been down the front, I touched his mic.”

“Well done,” I said, “how was that?”

“Oh my God, it’s you, do you remember when Zig and Zag did that techno song, that was sooo wicked, got any rizzlas ?”

This is how it was for most of the evening. Extremely nice, enthusiastic random moments, conversations that made a Jack Karouac stream of consciousness rant sound like a well crafted, super-structured piece of prose.

Pete Doherty himself I thought was surprisingly tuneful. Not that he shouldn't have been I suppose and not that his fans would have cared if he wasn't. They were there to be there, it’s their time and what’s wrong with that? They were there to see their man. And his woman as it turned out, Ms. Moss coming on stage briefly to give "him" a kiss and "them" a wave. The crowd went crazy. The super model and the iconic rock star, in love "live on stage."

The gig ended as these things must. Everyone seemed more than happy. Mr. Doherty finished off with a Clash song, obviously a huge influence on him, along with the Jam I would guess.

“Chris, are you going back stage? Can you get us back stage with you?” asked a kid in dark glasses, a bunch of girls giggling nervoulsy behind him.

“Nah, I’m going home, I’m gonna watch Question Time.”

“Question Time, what’s that?”

“It’s a show about getting older but still being interested”

“Oh, sounds cool.”

God Bless them all, aren’t they wonderful ?

x.

P.S. Don’t know if you saw Q.T. but Shirley Williams was brilliant, she always has been.

P.P.S. Thanks Nick, I had a fab night.

P.P.S. Had a fat week, going for a thin weekend, the opposite of the usual.

P.P.P.S. I want to die by suffocating in a giant tub of humous.

P.P.P.P.S. Parsnip, stop talking about it and get on with it. I do and always have read every post every day, relax man, it's all aright.

P.P.P.P.P.S. I fear it's winter but the trees still seem a little unsure.

Did watch Extras, it was brilliant.

I watched Q.T. on SKY PLUS at about half past one this morning.

Rains gone crazy, I have a leeky roof and now a musical red bucket, whoop whooy!

Off to the gym now to make room for the humous tonight.

Telegraph crossword untouched, perfect.

ALL REQUEST FRIDAY countdown two hours eighteen minutes to go.

Moments like those should be cherished - and they're always better for being spontaneous. Imagine if you had planned for this evening, spent a while at home beforhand getting ready, making sure you were wearing the right clothes, checking your ticket was still in your pocket and that you had enough money. You'd probably leave late and end up rushing to get to the gig on time all flustered and then wouldn't enjoy the randomness of it as much cos you had this definitive plan that just wasn't coming to fruition.

But instead you wernt on a whim, and at the expense of a pal, thus turning the event into one huge adventure into the unknown! I love adventures and wish they would happen more often to me...

PS - was loving the John Denver last night, we nearly had Annie's Song as our first dance at our wedding but settled for Something by the Beatles instead.

Morning Christophe - you snuck in early this morning! Glad you had a good night. I have quite a lot of mates like that, all over the country - although I do chat to a lot of them on e-mail all day (can you tell I'm not that busy at work??!)

Plans for weekend? Going to go to pub tonight, and then a good chill out weekend, long walks with dogs etc etc. Bliss. Might watch the match tomorrow- see how our boys get on.

    Good morning bloggers and schloggers!

Chris that sounds like a truly great night out. It is my experience though that people nowadays do not bother talking to strangers as it is installed in the youth that it is dangerous in some way. Of course you are a celebrity so people would think they have a right to talk to you (can not understand it myself) even when you are off duty having fun. Tour image breaks down the barriers that we hold up in front of our everyday façade. So well done for being “normal” and speaking to the kids out having fun! :-) They will remember the evening for a lot longer than you will I am sure.

I am out tonight with Mrs BigUn to a charity event run by the local radio station (who I do not listen to) but a band called the “Rolling Clones” are playing so I expect a good night will be had by one and all. Tickets only cost £10 so cheep as chips night out, I am sure the charity donations will make me a poor man (Maybe that is why my wife is driving and staying sober to look after her housekeeping for next week) :-(

    Still happy Friday everyone! :-))))

As it ifs Friday (like I need an excuse?) here is a little joke for you all :-))

    Bill & Hillary

Bill and Hillary are at the Yankee season opener sitting in the first row, with the Secret Service people directly behind them. One of the Secret Service guys leans forward and whispers something to Bill. At first, Clinton stares at the guy, looks at Hillary, looks back at the agent, and shakes his head.

The agent then says, "Mr. President, it was a unanimous request of the entire team, from the owner of the team to the bat boy." Bill hesitates... but begins to change his mind when the agent tells him the fans would love it! Bill shrugs his shoulders and says, "OK! If that is what the people want. Come here Hilly baby..." With that, Bill gets up, grabs Hillary by her collar and the seat of her pants, lifts her up, and tosses her right over the wall onto the field.

She gets up kicking, swearing, screaming, "I'll kill you! You Mother *% $%**!!! I'll kill you!"

The crowd goes absolutely wild. Fans are jumping up & down, cheering, hooting & hollering, and high-fiving. Bill is bowing, smiling and waving to the crowd. He leans over to the agent and says, "How about that! I would have never believed how much everyone would enjoy that!

Noticing the agent has gone totally pale, he asks what is wrong. The agent replies, "Sir, I said they want you to throw out the first 'Pitch'."

Come on smile it is the weekend :-))))

    Hello!

I'm a virgin blogger (so please be gentle with me...or at least warm your hands first) but after reading you guys chatting for the last few days I couldn't hold back any longer. So here I am.

    Fun, isn't it?!

So I was feeling a bit sorry for myself this morning (mostly because, I think, it's a full moon and they always make my moods go a bit wonky) but also because I've got no plans for this evening. Now usually that's not something that particularly irks me but today it feels different.

Friends are either babied-up or already have plans with their significant 'others' so I was feeling a little bit....drifting.

But now I've read Mr E's blog it has renewed my faith that if you're open to it The Universe will invariably give you a big ole' golden ticket to funland as long as you keep 'em peeled!

My plans for the weekend? Well obviously something fab tonight (c'mon Universe!) then there'll be the usual combination of pony-related fun and some yoga but this weekend I'm also on a course all about a groovy thing called The Enneagram. It's all about personality types and finding out which one of the 9 you are. Then you can learn how to apply it to your life; find out why you clash with certain people, identify what really drives you, how you can better relate to other people...as well as the implications it has for the spiritual side of life. Groovy, huh?!

    Thanks for being gentle...!

    Namaste,

    Meg x

P.S. It is winter...but now we can legitimately eat porridge - yey!

P.P.S Chris - whilst drowning in a tub of humous is definitely a good way to meet the maker (Waitrose?) may I suggest prevention of this by always dipping with two celery sticks? Then you can fashion a snorkle in the event of being pulled under by a strong currant. Hang on...I feel a Tommy Cooper joke coming on...

I will be trying to phone you this evening between 5 and 7 to request a song, how do other people ever get through? Then we are off to my friends' house to play games and drink lots of alcohol. Hi Chris et al on blog,

re having a healthy weekend - me and my other 'alf don't have weekends, we have 'marbles'.
If you count how many years you have until you are seventy (eighty if you are feeling fit!) and multiply by 52, that's how many weekends you have.
Imagine you have a big vase and put a marble in for every weekend you have left. On monday morning you have to remove a marble from your vase. This means that you go into every weekend thinking 'I mustn't waste my marble' and you will do something positive every weekend that you will enjoy and benefit from. Especially if you don't have many marbles in your vase!!!

    Don't waste your marbles!!!

There's been lots of studies which seem to be proving that positive thought can actually help to make someone better, even if they aren't aware that people are thinking of them. So I just wanted to let Big'Un know that from now until next Friday when you're appointment is, I will be sending you massively positive thoughts for an excellent result at your consultant, and I hope that all the other bloggers will join in with me on doing it. ++++++++++++++

Now that sounds like an excellent night, good to see that you're there for grabbing life by the b*//s and going with the flow - I would have loved it myself but have got to be honest here and say that the only time I've ever heard Pete Doherty sing was when he was on the Jonathan Ross show so I wouldn't have known anything much at all - I'd have done much better with The Clash and 1000% better with The Jam, I could sing along to Weller all night.

In answer to your P.P.P.P.P.S. - nooo don't let it be winter yet, it really needs to be autumn. I think that autumn is just the most gorgeous season when all the trees are changing etc - beautiful. What isn't beautiful is when your neighbours notify you that they've got a wasps nest in their roof at the back of the house and then you look and see them all swarming about which makes you feel ill and then your hubby comes down the stairs and tells you that as he was getting out of bed this morning a wasp flew in the window into the room (and we sleep at the front where I thought I was safe) ... don't mind wasps on their own but not in swarms so I am now Cowardly Katie who is too scared to go into her bedroom in case there are 1,000's of them in there ..... I'll wait for hubby to come home from work and then send him in.

Not gonna be a thin weekend here (hurray) in tonight with a bottle (or 2) of the red stuff, out for lunch with a friend tomorrow, then have another friend coming round tomorrow evening, then there's no specific plans yet for Sunday but I'm sure something will come up that can help me avoid all the jobs that I really should be doing.

Brixton Academy is my most local and favourite venue. It's a perfect size. I have been curious about Babyshambles but not enough to pay to go and see them. My son went to a gig that Pete showed up for and did just 10 mins. Luckily it was at a festival so not that disappointing. It's good to get your opinion being as you are one of the few whose opinion I would deem worthy. Have that! x

Don't you just love those random nights? Live gigs are still my best night out but once or twice a month is enough now. I love all that young energy and I'm lucky enough to have a youngster of my own at home most of the time.

As a young teen I was a goth/hippie/punk band loving girlie and I met and married a superb guitarist (father of my son) and lived the band life. Great times. I'm pleased to see that my (and his dad's) penchant for live bands had passed onto my son, Joe, who is in the process of trying out drummers for his band. I've allowed him the garage. I have a large double garage and half was meant to be for my car and general junk and the other half for Joe's 'space' that he's set up as a nightclub. Now he's in a band (guitarist and front man) they need to practice and so need the other half of the garage. Car now lives on street and junk in attic. There's so much more a garage space can be used for than housing a car. I'm very excited about the band/garage thing. My ex and I would have loved that facility but instead had to drag ourselves to band practice at various locations across SE London.

Joe has worked really hard as a runner for a small production company (that he loves) for expenses only for the past two months and he has heard today that he has been offered a permanent paid position. I've texted 7 musician friends this morning to see if I can get a cheap drum kit and two have already come back to me. I'll be seeing the kits tonight and I'll have a drum kit set up for him by tomorrow night as his reward so he can have his band practice in the garage. I can't wait!!! He already has several guitars and a bass and amps and mikes so the kit will complete the package. xx

I must fess up that I do have an alterior motive.......Joe's been making noises about moving to Clapham with some mates so I need to make him as comfortable at home as poss so that this is put off for as long as poss. I also have his girlfriend on my side. Hope you don't think that's too evil. Surely it's only natural???!! xxx

Tonight I have the man I've fancied for years coming over to talk allotments and I'm very excited about it! He's going to be sharing mine with me. Boy how my values have changed. Once upon a time there was only one thing I'd stay in for on a Friday night.......;) Tonight the dirty talk will be limited to compost and manure......or maybe not......:)......ever hopeful!

I wish you and your bloggers a super weekend and look forward to my 5pm fixx.

'Himself' has gone off to the wilds of Lancashire for a wedding, I could not get time off work so I am pooch sitting. Except that tonight i am going to a 60's night with girlies. I will be wrapping up warm tho. Will be doing the chippee run before going out so the doggies will get their expected friday night fodder...and so will I.

I watched QT, usually do, I like the sassy Mr D. Also I don't take the time to sit and read newspapers so its a good way to keep up with some main topical stuff....fact is, its the most political i'm ever going to get. Martin (himself); says I have the attention span of a gnat. QT is usually short sharp and to the point. I can cope with that.

Good Frugal lady last night on the show but I missed the hedgehog woman, will do the listen again. Martin had a moan about the mushroom foraging, he said people must make sure they pick the mushrooms carefully so that the spores remain for next years growing. Is that a fact?

Have a great weekend Chris, suspect mine will be a thin one too. Although I am contemplating rejoining the chocolate tasting club to see if I can maintain better control this time....how wonderful!

Glad you had a good night; I'm not 100% convinced by Mr Doherty though. A kind of emperor's new clothes thing. I know he's really charismatic, but that doesn't automatically mean he's great. That said, Dirty Pretty Things are pretty good. And it is a top film he's nicked the title from.

F38 - they (Gordon Ramsay's places) are [insert your own word here] fantastic. Try to go for the kitchen table if you can get a group of friends together, but you have to book that a bit in advance. The food is better than I could imagine food tasting, as opposed to even most good restaurants where it is just extremely well cooked food.

Haven't tried the Fat Duck yet though, so there's always somewhere to aim for.

#1 Jo. As Frank Sinatra said, it's Lennon and McCartney's best song. Went for Sam Cooke myself though: Nothing's Gonna Change This Love. Fantastic, but no-one else seemed to know it. Philistines, the lot of them. But then, I invited them, so what does that say...?

On my own this weekend, as my wife and daughter have moved to Sheffield ahead of me. I'm still working out my notice down South. All suggestions for interesting weekends are therefore gratefully received. I fancy some sparkling shiraz, but drinking on your own's never a good thing.

Totally different from a gig with 3000 at Brixton, but what a buzz to have that many people all enjoying the same thing, all there for the same reasons.
Surely there must be a way to harness the "like-mindedness" of large groups of people at gigs, festivals, large sporting events, etc.

    Good afternoon all

McCrumble here, still incognito. Ravel is currently on a shopping spree to the nearest village (approx 8 miles away across boggy ground). Hopefully he'll come back with some chocolate digestives, for I am suffering in my humble croft without them.

I know from experience how it can be like to garner too much attention from the public, but unlike Mr Evans I tend to end up on worst terms because of it. Take the following example:

Most of the people visiting the institute are there on bona-fide business, but occasionally we do get someone there to rub shoulders with the worlds first celebrity parasitologist (c'est moi, in case you were wondering). A while back some children showed up asking for my autograph after hearing me on local radio. I duly obliged, and expected them to skip merrily away. Unfortunately, one of them decided to pluck up the courage to ask for a tour of the Institute. I initally refused, to which the response was a cacophony of calls for me to 'pleeeeeese' let them in. I eventually relented, mainly because I feared negative publicity in the village (we have a testy relationship at the best of times).

So in we went. I took them around the living quarters and towards the labs. I didn't really want them in there as McCavity was working, but one of them suddenly ran ahead and barged through the double doors. A second later, three other kids had joined him, and I was running in hot pursuit.

Pushing through the double doors I almost fell over the small group. They were standing absolutely still a couple of feet inside, eyes staring at McCavity over by the operating table. I immediately realised what had fixed them to the spot. It was a Friday, traditionally the day when we perfuse the rabbits to collect their blood for our experiments. McCavity had three of them strung up, and was in the process of sucking the remaining fluid from one of the animals with a miniature suction pipe apparatus. The blood was then being fed into a large jar prepared with anti-coagulant for later processing. Unfortunately, the suction was disloding bits of tissue, and stretching others, giving the illusion that the rabbit was still alive and capable of movement.

After a few seconds the first child had seen enough. 'Murderers!' he shouted, before legging it back through the doors. The other kids were only seconds behind. I could hear them shouting as they ran from the Institute.

To cut a long story short, I had to entertain a delegation of parents and village leaders that evening and make a solemn promise never to exploit their 'vulnerable' children again. I was also forced to issue a public statement at my own cost in the local newspaper apologising for any distress. Finally, the local church tapped me for a donation to help 'heal the wounds' caused by my 'short-sightedness'

I no longer write autographs within 5 miles of the Institute.

Afternoon Mr E and fellow Schloggers,

I simply adore that question from someone you like - you just know a good thing is going to follow.

It happened to me a couple of Fridays ago. Out with some lovely friends for a gorgeous indian meal talking about where to meet men etc. (they're all loved up and were talking about my recent dating exploits). One friend suggested that wherever you go to meet them, it should be doing something you love doing - so whilst going to the gym would mean meeting lots of men, for me, it would be hell on earth (give me a pair of running shoes or a bike any day). There then followed a discussion about what we all liked doing (our common link is that we all sing - but it was discounted as a way to meet men as we sing in an all ladies group and any mixed groups we've seen, don't usually have men younger than 50 singing in them!) I said that I loved watching rugby....

...Next thing to follow was - "What are you doing tomorrow afternoon?"

"Nothing special, just the usual Saturday afternoon mooch."

"Well how about coming to the rugby with me and my family? We've got a hospitality box for the day."

It was an amazing evening, followed by an even more amazing day at the rugby with my generous friend and her lovely, welcoming family. I had a ball.

So here's to life, friendship, love, all-request Friday and the weekend, Cheers!

Id hate to live closer to work now because i look on your show as a close friend that wipes away the day so i get back to my husband and son in a great mood - not grumpy and stressed from work problems.
I thought id send this because i want you to know that i think your doing a brilliant job along with your team and that i think your a great person and no im not a random nutter. Dont be so hard on yourself and keep up the great work. You must be good because youve even converted my dad who previously dismissed you as a prat (his exact words actually) and now even he listens! wont be listening next week, my son is in hospital (its been a tough year but youve even helped me through that)but all things being equal i'll be back at 5:30 the week after (finish work at 5:30). Interesting to read that #62 is not a morning person and punishes himself by doing morning stuff.

I've worked for 30 years on the London Underground working shifts that have involved me walking out of the front door at 2.30am, walking 90 minutes to a night bus and then spending nearly two hours on that before even getting to work. And, you've guessed it, I'm not a morning person either.

Of couse other weeks I worked late shifts or nights but even they had their disadvantages.

Just to make myself look even dafter I have to admit that I'm a bit claustrophobic - 30 years on the underground would seem to be an improbable career, eh?

So why do we do stuff that we're not compatible with when we know full well what we're doing??

    Good evening Chris & all..

.... well I was right - it's a fat weekend for me. We (me, hubby and 3 teenage kids) ended up going for a curry at a gorgeous Indian restaurant about 7 miles away and hubby drove cos he's working in the morning so couldn't really drink much which was great cos it meant I could. Had a lovely evening, lots of laughter and chatter, even our 16 year old son was a chatterbox instead of a grunter - have to take him out more often!

For a change (not) it's raining here, it's hardly stopped for days, luckily we've no leaks though. The aforementioned son had a leak coming into his bedroom from the tank in the attic last year and what did he do but put a bottle under it in which he collected the water, emptied it and then collected more = he did this for 5 days and would have done it for longer except that I noticed it in the middle of his floor .... what did he say when I asked him why he hadn't told us -- 'I meant to but forgot' ..... for 5 days? - Boys!

What's the crossword in the telegraph then - is it a straight or a cryptic? I like the cryptic ones, been doing the one in the Express lately.

Off now for a sprawl and to read some of my book - hope everyone's having fun.

Hi Chris, Isn't it funny being at a gig that you don't expect to be at? I remember my friend taking me to see The Cult in London at the last minute and then the after show party. She was so trendy and I wasn't and still am not - she was pointing at all these people that were famous and I had heard of them but didn't recognise them - I was just worried about my green trousers and white shirt and whether I was trendy enough! I also went to see Black Sabbath and Van Halen in Manchester with my older brother when I was 15 and wore a white silk shirt and black cord trousers and was quite thin at that time - I felt so out of place because everyone was in black. Now I'm in my forties I couldn't care less! It really doesn't matter what you wear does it! Why didn't anyone tell me when I was in my teens - life is so cruel! I did have a great time at both gigs though I just wished I had more confidence. Did you have lots of confidence when you were younger Chris? I hope so, it is so horrible when you don't. I was amazed when I went to my school reunion and one of the boys from our year said 'do you know every boy in our year fancied you at some time at school' I felt so cheated cos I really didn't know! I just wondered why I stayed in all those bedsits in London with no visitors when I was 19!!! I went into shock for the rest of the evening. Anyone reading this who is at school - just pretend you have confidence and don't live in a bedsit - it is a lot easier if you don't!! xx

As for the jokes I have loads of them filed away (some I could not possibly publish on here!) and some I will for your enjoyment (I hope) as I do not want to offend anyone and in this kind of media you have to be careful.

I thought that whilst it is Monday and we all know Christopher will be late in Blogging due to his return to the smoke I have include a little joke to keep you smiling (I hope) until he fills our lives with his wisdom for another week.

    So here goes :-)))

    Charles and Camilla

On the evening of the Royal wedding, Camilla was becoming somewhat uncomfortable in her regal attire: Unfortunately, the shoes she had worn that day were a bit too small and, by the time the festivities were over, Camilla's feet were in agony.
When Camilla and Charles withdrew to their bridal suite, the only thing she could think of was getting her ill-fitting shoes off.
The rest of the Royal Family crowded round the door to the bedroom and they heard roughly what they expected, grunts, straining noises and the occasional muffled scream.
Eventually they heard Charles say, "God, that was tight."
"There," whispered the Queen. "I told you Camilla was a virgin."
Then, to their surprise, they heard Charles say, "Right. Now for the other one." This was followed by even more grunting and straining and at last Charles exclaimed, "My God! That was even tighter!"
"That's my boy," said the Duke. "Once a sailor, always a sailor.”

Go on smile it is Monday after all :-))

    Happy Monday one and all.
