What was a soldier’s food like in WW1?

Description

Dan Snow describes the food rations supplied for British soldiers during WW1 and compares these with what German soldiers had. The value of different foods is touched on and we learn that, at the start of the war, German rations included more carbohydrates and alcohol, but British rations had more variety and a thousand calories more.

Classroom Ideas

Napoleon is claimed to have said “an army marches on its stomach”. This clip could be useful when studying life in the trenches, discussing whether or not the rations provided adequate energy for fighting men, and finding out why the food supplied changed during the course of the war.
