What is restorative justice?

Description

A reconstruction of a mediation session between the accused and victim demonstrates the type of reparation that can be agreed upon in place of prosecution. The efficacy of this type of justice is discussed.

Classroom Ideas

The clip could lead into a discussion topic: “What are the alternatives to prison? How effective are alternatives to prison? How can their effectiveness be measured, and how reliable are the resulting statistics?” Students may wish to undertake further investigation into the ‘alternatives to prison’ topic. They could analyse statistics and rates of re-offending following Restorative Justice Programmes in Scotland, via the SACRO website.
