Meet the MSP

Description

Kris Sinclair is 19, a youth worker and a member of the Scottish Youth Parliament. He sees the SNP proposal to raise the minimum age to buy alcohol to 21 as discriminatory, penalising all young people because of the behaviour of a minority. He raises his concerns with his MSP, Sandra White. She cites a pilot study in Falkirk that resulted in a major drop in antisocial behaviour. Kris ends by stating that how the proposal progresses could change his voting behaviour.

Classroom Ideas

After viewing the clip, students can discuss the matters of social inequality that it raises. Both in terms of why some people are more likely to commit alcohol-influenced crime, and about how difficult it is to create laws that don’t penalise the majority because of minority behaviour. The clip could lead into investigation of how proposed laws pass through parliament.
