Approaches to develop social factors

The social factor relates to the features which can change when people have to work or perform on their own or with others. It also concerns areas of conduct while performing as well as the effect of culture and environment on the performance.

Sharing responsibility

This is when a random pupil/athlete is selected each session as team captain. This pupil is then in charge of team selection, instructing various roles/tactics and promoting team etiquette. Only the team captain can speak to opposition or referee.

This approach promotes confidence amongst players, promotes unity and respect, and gives all pupils a voice.

Rewards

Etiquette and team morale can be developed by encouraging good sportsmanship through the recording and rewarding of players who do it. Praise, prizes etc can be used as rewards to motivate players. When performers see the value of behaving correctly, behaviour often changes for the better, ie less evidence of arguing, disagreements and fewer examples of poor conduct. The coach or captain could keep a record of votes for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) - the person who has demonstrated good etiquette and encouraged others to do the same.
