The S in PESTLE stands for social influences.

Social influences are the cultural and aspects of an environment. Demographics refer to characteristics within a population such as:

  • language and culture
  • religion
  • educational attainment (eg no qualifications, educated to GCSE or A level, educated to degree level)
  • income level
  • occupation
  • family structure (eg , , )

Businesses are interested in the people that live nearby as they are more likely to be their customers.

A supermarket may extend its product range to meet the needs of a local community.

For example, if a community has a thriving Chinese or Polish community, a supermarket may stock products such as lotus root (a popular vegetable used in Chinese cooking) or sauerkraut (a popular Polish pickled cabbage dish).

Alternatively, if the income level of a location is high, there may be more local retailers that sell items that are priced at a such as art galleries or exclusive restaurants.
