Nouns

Welsh nouns are usually masculine or feminine. You must use the following feminine forms if you are referring to feminine nouns:

  • dwy (always followed by a soft mutation)
  • tair
  • pedair

Translate the following expressions into Welsh. Here’s a clue for you: they’re all feminine nouns and therefore you will have to use the feminine forms, dwy, tair, pedair:

two sisters, three hours, four pence, three pounds, two films, three television programmes

Faint o...? – How many?

To use these questions, you should follow the following pattern:

Sawl + singular noun, eg:

Sawl sinema sy yn yr ardal? – How many cinemas are there in the area?

Sawl anifail anwes sy gyda ti/gennyt ti? – How many pets do you have?

Sawl rhaglen welaist ti neithiwr? – How many programmes did you see last night?

Faint o (+ soft mutation) + plural noun, eg:

Faint o sinemâu sy yn yr ardal? – How many cinemas are there in the area?

Faint o anifeiliaid anwes sy gyda ti/gennyt ti? – How many pets do you have?

Faint o raglenni welaist ti neithiwr? – How many programmes did you see last night?

Why not prepare some questions about the area that you could ask in a group discussion, eg:

How many shops are there in the area?
