Other little words and soft mutation

There are many other little words that are also frequently used but here are a few of the most important:

  • i – to
  • o – from
  • ar – on
  • am – about/for
  • at – to

These words always cause a soft mutation.

Example

Dw i'n mynd i ____________ (Caerdydd) dros y penwythnos.

Dw i'n mynd i Gaerdydd dros y penwythnos.

Question

Look at the little words in this passage and then mutate the word in brackets.

  1. Mae o'n teithio i ____________ (Bangor) heno.
  2. Dw i'n mynd i ____________ (darllen) heno.
  3. Dw i'n byw yn Abertawe nawr ond dw i’n dod o ____________ (Llanelli).
  4. Dw i'n hoffi gwrando ar ____________ (bandiau) Cymraeg yn canu.
  5. Dw i'n ____________ (beic) newydd.

Look at this sentence - Dw i'n mynd i ˛µĂŞłľ bĂŞl-droed heno. - I'm going to a football game tonight.

Remember that ˛µĂŞłľ is one of the few words that never mutates after the small words.
