Trust assessment of 'Canvas' proposals - consultation responses

The ±«Óătv Executive has applied to the Trust for permission to form a joint venture that would promote a standards based open environment for internet-connected digital television devices. For consumers this would enable subscription-free access to on-demand television services and other internet-based content, through a new broadband connected digital device.

The Trust commenced its assessment of the Executive's application on 26 February 2009 with a seven week consultation which ended on 17 April 2009. It invited views on both the likely market impact and public value of proposals.

The Trust received over 800 responses from stakeholders and licence fee payers. Our consultation drew extensive comment from stakeholders, ranging from internet service providers, pay-television operators, content aggregators, consumer groups, industry bodies and consumer electronic manufactures. We also received submissions from individual members of the public and are grateful to those who took the time and effort to share their views with us.

The full text of all non-confidential stakeholder submissions, along with a summary of all consultation responses from the general public, responding to questions on the likely public value of proposals, are published below.
