Dag's on the road again

Letter from Dag.
Hello to all of you readers and friends of Island Blogging.
I know that I'm not writing about Scottish or Island life but I hope that you are not tired of me, yet.
My wife and I took a drive to her birthplace to visit her parents. They live in Rosendal which is pretty close to Bergen, only two hours drive away.
In Rosendal there is a big property and mansion, Baroniet. It is not popular with the locals as they remember the old times when the lairds ruled over them.
Nowadays the goverment is the owner and it is now open for everyone to visit.
The people living in Hardanger have always been good boat builders. They still are. My father-in-law has been a boat builder all his life and been working on this shipyard. The boat is a supply ship for the oilindustry, going to the north of Norway.
The weather has been very good this autumn. My pictures will show that.

We visited, as a family, about 10 years ago. The house was rather like a minor stately home in Britain but I loved the boatyard museum beside the the pier. we travelled by the high speed boat service from Bergen. Tusen tak for bildene.

Well it didn't, so here goes...It was a very atmospheric trip for my parental units and baby bipeds, with the cloud down at fiord level, what the Irish would call a 'soft' day, so its fine to see Rosendal mist-free!

Oooh, I've been there too!!! Two summers ago, while crewing on the Swan. Arne came with his bairns and boat too, so we were sailing in company. The water was really warm, and we had a great time swimming while waiting for the Swan to let go of the bottom so we could leave! (Good facilities for visiting yachts in Rosendal, loos, showers n laundry.) Norheimsund where the museum is was nice too. The boat Mathild comes from there, she is used along similar lines to the Swan. Great pics Dag!

We had a trip to Norheimsund, by bus from Bergen. The "Fartøyvensenter" (a living working traditional boat experience ) was incredible. For me one of the highlights was a polyglot conversation we had in the ropewalk. We were being shown round by a german girl whose shipwright partner was doing a year's experience of Norwegian traditional boatbuilding. Her english was excellent but lacked some of the technical vocabulary.We got by on a marvellous mixture of english, norwegian and german. It is quite surprising how much seafaring terms are alike, if not identical, in all three languages.
