Unlike most of the VADs at the Bevan, Nell is a professional nurse and therefore a competent, welcoming face for Dorothea.
Whilst Nell is unphased by the burgeoning numbers of war-wounded in her new job, she is also a young, naïve romantic at heart. She soon becomes a casualty to the Canadian charms of Max, who by her own admission “flatters to deceive”.
