Adrian Chiles introduces highlights from today's three Premier League games, the pick of which must be Arsenal versus Liverpool. The last time these two teams met was in last season's Champions League quarter-final, which Liverpool won 5-3 on aggregate after a scintillating 4-2 victory in the second leg at Anfield. It was the third time in a week that the two teams had met; the Gunners didn't win any of those three games but have won four of their last five home league meetings with Liverpool.

Tottenham visited Newcastle, with both sides having spent much of the early part of the season in the lower reaches of the Premier League. Tottenham's last three league visits to St James's Park have all ended in 3-1 defeats, but the arrival of Harry Redknapp has given Spurs fans renewed hope.

The third encounter was between West Brom and Manchester City at the Hawthorns. Baggies fans have happy memories of City's recent visits – none more so than in January 2005 when bottom-of-the-table Albion's 2-0 victory was their first win in 16 games and sparked a revival which saw them escape relegation on the final day of the season.

Stoke were thumped 5-0 when they visited Old Trafford last month, so they will have been hoping that Manchester United were suffering jetlag from their recent trip to Japan when the teams met at the Britannia Stadium today.

Aston Villa would have fancied their chances against Arsenal after breaking their losing streak against the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium back in November.

Fulham inflicted the first defeat of Harry Redknapp's Tottenham reign last month and will have been hoping to do the double over Spurs by winning at White Hart Lane today. High-flying Chelsea hosted struggling West Brom, while Bolton travelled to Anfield to meet Liverpool.

In the day's other games, Portsmouth faced West Ham at Fratton Park, Blackburn went to Sunderland, and Newcastle were at Wigan, who are managed by boyhood Magpies fan Steve Bruce.

Today's games included Arsenal versus Portsmouth, in what was Gunners legend Tony Adams's first trip back to his old club as a Premier League manager. Liverpool were looking to boost their title challenge against Newcastle, a team they beat 3-0 both home and away last season. And there was a West London derby at Craven Cottage, where Fulham played host to Chelsea.

Mark Hughes took his Manchester City team back to Ewood Park, where he spent four seasons at Blackburn Rovers before moving to City in the summer. Sunderland travelled to Everton, where they were thrashed 7-1 last season.
