I'm having to remember 53 years ago, when I was a young man of 21 of age, the year was 1951.I had just completed my national service, serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps. I wanted to train as a physiotherapist, but the physio school at the R.V.I. did not accept male students. I would have to go to Manchester to train. I did not feel like going away again after just being discharged from the army. I decided that I would train as a male nurse at the R.V.I. for 3 years training. I joined the Preliminary Training School with another male nurse, together with 38 18-year-old female nurses. After 1 week's training he left never to return, so I was one male with 38 nurses. All of the nurses were residents, I was the only non-resident. I had to walk to the R.V.I. for my lunch as I was not allowed to eat with the other nurses in their own dining room. We did not get any breaks except for midday lunch. Our school working hours were from 8.30am until 4.30 pm Monday to Friday Saturday 8.30am until 12.30pm. After three month's training we all went off to the R.V.I. to the wards and various departments for the first years practical training. More...
