Afternoon Christophe Lovely Pies!

Names. I was almost a Samantha. But my middle name has got 2 A's in it, as had my maiden name, so thankfully mum and dad changed me to a Cheryl or else A would have featured in pretty much every other letter of my name. Til I met The One and changed it, that is!

On the racing theme - did you hear the news that the Moto GP is moving to Silverstone as of 2010. I'm gutted!!! Our annual trip to Donington is one of the best weekends of the year. It took a while to find the prefect B and B and to suss out the local pubs etc, now it's all change! Granted, Silverstone is nearer to home than Donington but it just won't be the blimmin' same!!! Grrrrrrrrrr.

AND just because F1 snore-athon has moved to Donington, there's a 100K refurb for the track and its facilities.

Grrrrrrrrr again!

Loving the reading, and the notion of making up words. I'm sure as you read the blog every day new words just spring off your screen ......

Possible names for future children include Hope and Kathryn for a girl and Jacob or Daniel for a boy - with old fashioned names ourselves we would like something with a bit of a kick to it!

At the risk of outing the GD, we named her after summat you normally reserve for the family parrot. But as it's short (?) for Mary, that's what she's registered as. Ergo we have had endless fun with her as she tries to explain this conundrum at school, the bank, passport office and so on, not to mention the fancy-dress potential.

Just be mindful of the surname though. As one of the saddos with a TOG name, you really don't want to be called Ivor Corker or Alf Hart, or be excluded from a career as a Heart Surgeon in Ireland just because your name is Angie O'Plasty.

Anyway, names ... my big thing is to make sure the initials don't spell anything weird! very important!!
My dad used to teach someone called Russell Sprout (honestly, it's true!) - so i guess testing possible name out loud is also a good idea!!
Hope did ok for first try!!

One has to worry about initials as well. For example, Irene Paula Quick..... I.P. Quick......

Naming your child is one of the biggest challenges life has to offer IMO!

Avoiding unfortunate short forms/mixes with your surname/initials etc etc............not picking the same name as everyone else whose kids will be in their future school class..........yet not picking something completely weird and bullying-inducing unless the child is strong enough to handle it (and how would you know?)

I find people who just give the child their own name sad and lacking in imagination but maybe they just gave up the battle?

We're still quite happy with all our kids names and they don't seem to mind them, altho' one always just uses the short form of his, but when I think of some of the options that were considered they had lucky escapes!

Good luck Chris and Tash. At least Evans is a fairly innocuous surname to start from.

Mind you - I'd have said that about Green too until my Mum had a friend called Theresa Green (I kid you not!).

I had a friend who's initials spelt C.O.W!! Also my brother knew somebody called Hope who married Mr Hope! What are the chances of that happening.

I am eternally grateful to my parents for giving me a normal name, although they hate it that everyone shortens it!! Ho Hum, they can't have everything.

Oh yes, books! I've read one of BB's travel books, I think it was an australia one - brilliant. Can't understand why I've not read any more! Nor can I understand why I've suddenly become a sucker for Slummy Mummy and Domestic Diva type rom-com books, never really used to be my thing.

Naming our little one was tricky. But we've managed to call him a good old fashioned name which is still fairly (but not too) common. And of course we had to keep his middle name a traditional one - his great-grandad and grandad's first name, and his dad's middle name. Wonder if he'll carry on the tradition. He was nearly a Charlie, after my grandad, but Benjamin John won out :)

I always used to hate my surname, just because I couldn't imagine being famous with a name like that! Now my name's changed and nobody can spell it. Nothing worse than spelling out your surname to somebody and them assuming you must've spelt it wrong...

Shouldn't have opened that bag of lindt mini egg chocolate truffle things....

Debbie - little ronnie - my dad-in-law was referred to as "the lad" even after he got married, as he and his dad shared the same name. The name lives on but I think your name is so important, it defines you, that I agree, you should have a name of your own :)

For some reason on my Father's side all the men have the middle name David, no idea why!!

A lady I know has five sons who's names all start with the letter A. Must have been a nightmare when they started to get post.

Dexter makes me think of that US tv show about a serial killer ....

that's the other problem, isn't it. You think of a name and then someone reminds you of someone called that at school or in past life who was a bit of a ..... and it puts you off the name you chose.

My full initials are CPT and at a former job my email was cpt@ ...... so my best friend subsenquently named me The Captain, coz every time I emailed her from work that's what it looked like in her Inbox!

What about George Foreman calling all his sons George...... Not sure how many he has, but took about confusing........

The same care should be taken when naming children as naming pets. Think of a name then go to your back door and shout the name (in full!) - and if you feel silly, embarrassed, or if curtains twitch - go for another one!

Talking of ancestors, my mum did a lot of research and was freqiuently stumped by masses of George, James, Charles and Williams. I think that was the sum total of the names used for 3 generations of boys in our family...

course in Cornwall there is that thing of using your middle name instead of your first name! so i everytime you go to the Drs or somewhere they call out your name and you ignore it cos it isnt' you! (or maybe it's just my family who do that!!)

Here there is a tendency to automatically abbreviate someone's name. James becomes Jim whether you go by Jim or not. It's a battle I go through almost daily asking people not to abbreviate my name. Although it's a good indication on how well someone knows me.

007 - you don't seem like a Jim to me - definitely a James. It's like Mr Diva - nobody 'cept his mum calls him David. He's a Dave. End of!

Cheryl's right - without specifying them in case I offend someone on here there are some names I hate just because I once knew a bullying or bitchy woman called them - or a rotten man for that matter!

And abbreviations - yes - people who presume to shorten my real name without asking if I mind don't get a warm reception.

And I think jumpy and I must be related............LOL

derbyfi, I make a point of thanking people when they ask me if I go by Jim or James. It happens once in a while. I hate it when I call myself James, and people then call me Jim.... hello, weren't you LISTENING!!!!!! Just a pet peeve of mine in case you didn't guess.....LOL

My cats are all I have ever named...I was nearly Catherine but my dad thought it was too posh, so I'm named for a writer and a queen...and two singers...that's song singers not sewing singers...

So, Christophe, you have a 'nom' for the bebe do you...would it be a French nom per chance...

I think its really important to consider what the name you give a child rhymes with as well. Kids love rhyming nasty things with names in the playground.... I wont add examples for fear of offending!

I don't really get people who call their kids the same as their last name eg Robin Robinson..... So please CLP if baby DJ is boy don't call him Evan!

My name also gets shortened, some are acceptable and some are really not. Weirdly my name also has been shortened and then that shortening lengthened to something else - which happened to be a multi-legged insect. Not nice, and my mother is the only one allowed to get away with it!

Like cornishgirlie my Dad has always been known by his middle name and he hates his first one so often ignores it when it is used! When he went into hospital years ago he got sick of telling the staff what his 'real' name was and finally asked the most junior nurse to amend the sign above his bed - which she did. It's a basic courtesy IMO to address someone who is sick with their preferred name.

Tis me..the one they call Scoobs..what ya mean youve forgotten me..its not been THAT long!

anyhoo..helloo! hope everyone is on tiptop form..certainly seems it..

..been busy with that work stuff and dont seem to have had a minute recently to come on here..but have been lurking as ever and reading your insightful and often very funny posts!

My abridged comments on recent things below...if anyone is bored please look away now...could well send you to sleep!

Names: i have a simple first name but without an i in..and my maiden name was a nightmare, hence keeping my married name post divorce..and some say it suits!
As for CtD comment about Mr Hunt...well i know someone with the same surname who changed his first name at 16 cos his parents christened him Mark..only thing that couldve been worse was Mike! It really is a Simpsons sketch!
Oh, and know someone who has given their child the initials A.S.S.. really! Anyway, im sure a suitable name will be chosen for bubba evans... we are all excited to find out im sure!

Books: BB is amazing..dont read got anywhere confined tho cos laughing out loud seems guaranteed... think ive read most of his and the Shakespeare one appeared at Christmas..may start it tomorrow now!

Tattoos: have been saying for years gonna do it..and GM is gonna take me when we`re off in April.. and he is adding to his collection of (subtle) three.. this is the man who hates needles but will happily let them ink him.. odd! But quite excited..and just have to find a design now!

Friends: Having a good friend who is always honest is a must i think..but hard situation. Unfortunately i tend to call a spade a spade and give my opinions..and my true friends appreciate it i hope..

Singledom: have been there and loved it..but am happily settled now and wouldnt change it for the world. And when i first met GM i wasnt actively looking for a relationship despite how we met..but it just happened and we clicked.. sometimes these things happen when we least expect.. happy 09 for the single ones of us out there..

As a really young kid, I liked the name Steve Highway... I was even going to change my name........ but idea only lasted for a few months....my parents were mortified that I would consider changing my name though. That probably added fuel to the fire.......

All this name abbreviating talk is making the Ting Tings song (That's not my name) run through my head......LOL

And bl**dy he** - that was longer than even I expected! Sorry!

Oh and one last point...re the driving discusssion the other day.. working in the optical environment the amount of people we see who shouldnt be legally driving but are.. its amazing. And we can do diddly squat about it except advise them against it..how mad is that? we know they cant see but cant do anything about it. we are thinking of getting a petition up to the g`ment to let opticians advise the DVLA if someone is below the legal eyesight driving limit ..will let u know if anything happens!

Mr Jumpy ought to have been called Fiddler, he fiddles with everything. Or Tinker. Knew a girl with the initials A Tinker, wonder what she's doing these days.

SBeep, unfortunately not. 'Someone' has been giving themselves cash advances and not writing them down...and I haven't got receipts...thank you for your suggestion all the same, but we aren't a big enough organisation...having said that, it it possible that one of the lads may have purchased some equipment...will have to quiz them at length under a warm light bulb.

Naming kids can be a nightmare, with a surname Walker we avoided names beginning with J, as they'd get Mr/Miss J Walker (jaywalker). We joked around with our first with the name Luke Skye, settled with Victoria pretty early on in the pregnancy, she is now 9 years old, were on earth has all the time gone. She also has two middle names, Victoria Elizabeth Anne (three Queens)

Racing drivers, let me guess we are going to get a Mansell or Hamilton Evans. Good luck with the birth etc.
