CALL ME A RACHEBITE, IF YOU MUST YOU MUST.

Chris Evans | 08:02 UK time, Thursday, 8 March 2007

It is day two now of the

.emergency television diet. It’s a little heard of ten day plan created by me, for me, to drop a stone before I have to appear on the telly next week on COMIC RELIEF.

It will include a complete abstention from any form of alcohol, bread, potatoes, all the way up until next Friday. It will also involve, a two hour work out every day and then in the afternoon my walking to work instead of getting a lift. It’s all very dull but it does work.

One of the best things about being on the telly, is that it forces you to look after yourself. There's a little vanity in all of us. I should of course do this anyway and I do try but no one really wants to do their homework unless they know they have to hand it in, do they ?

For a forty year old man I do seem to be a little soft, not so much lardy just soft but only on the top half of my body. My legs are rock solid and quite muscley but on my arms and around my sides I’m just plain soft, almost like a baby and for the life of me I can’t build up any muscles.

I might go back to yoga but I just can’t help remembering how hard it was and that was way back when I used to be fit, God knows what I’d be like at it now. Does work the old yoga though. The most receptive form of exercise I have ever done.

My friend Gareth is due round any second now, it’s his birthday today. Gareth’s a truly nice lad, he’s a television producer. At the moment we’re writing a script for something we’ve been working on for a couple of weeks. He comes to mine and we have a good couple of hours before we both go and do our day jobs. It’s amazing what you can fit in if you want to.

Good writing is all about honesty and honesty is all about having your life right, or at least knowing and being able to admit you’ve got it wrong. There’s nothing wrong with being wrong as long as you’re aware of it.

After that it’s doggie walking, phone calls and papers, then the gym, then more phone calls, then a radio script write, then a walk to work and then the show and then Foxy’s leaving do.

Ahhh, she’s so nice the Fox. We’ve booked a restaurant around the corner for a meal. No doubt there will be tears from the girls, as there will be from me especially when I’m shown the wine list or offered a beer. Maybe just the one eh ? That’s not going to hurt after all is it ? And it is Foxy’s leaving do for heaven’s sake..

Er
and then Gareth did say I could pop along to the bar where he’s having his birthday drinks

Do’h Do’h Do’h.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ! What a dilemma.

I wonder if an eight day emergency television diet would work, innovation could be the key here.

Have a nice day everyone. It looks like it’s going to be quite a warm one here. The sky’s already proving how blue and beautiful it can be.

P.S. Martin, take it an hour at a time. You have to replace your boozing with something more interesting otherwise you’re always going to go back to it. Walk, dig a pond, tidy your house. Time and thought are the enemy of the alcoholic, physical exertion is his saviour. Alcohol hates physical exercise, it knows your body will begin to crave the healthier things in life and want to leave “it” behind. P.E. also helps focus the brain and quieten the mind and in turn induces better sleep. Get loads of nice cold drinks in, fruit juices, cordials, some chocolate, fruit, surround yourself with anything but alcohol and then do something that makes you want or feel like you deserve to have one of your new treats. Good luck my friend, this is the only time I will refer to this. It’s time to stop asking for help and do something about it.

    Aaaaaaah Chris!

Good morning, and what a lovely day to be doing what you're doing. I too am off the booze, well wine and spirits, I am allowing myself a wee small lager, but after I was poorly last week, I think it is time to give my body a bit of a rest too. Been on it since the end of November on and off (since my birthday) and some clothes aren't fitting quite so loosely now!

Sounds like a fab idea doing the walking thing. I can't walk to work because it is too far, and there isn't a path for about a mile of it, and is pretty unsafe, so that's a BIG no no...I really want to get back into tai chi (which has been discussed on here at length) as I find this superb for keeping fit and for inner peace, but am having problems finding somewhere 'local'. I have also found out that I am being offered an interview for the course I have applied for, and that will certainly require a clear mind, so got to step up the effort I think!

I'm off to a 'do' tonight as well, and I'm gonna have to get the bus. I shall walk the first couple of stops, and get off a stop early, and I am allowing myself two half pints of lager, or four halves of shandy...ahem...try that yourself???

Best wishes to Foxy, we're all gonna miss her too, and a happy birthday to Gareth xxxxx

Anyhoo, have a fabulous day...I'm off to hang up my wildlife bird seed feeder in a minute so that I can watch all the birdies from my window.

What a lovely day...hope you enjoy it too...

It is nice of you to give Martin some support. I hope he, and others like him, heed your words.

Crash diets and crazy exercise regimes? Lots of swimming, lots of saunas, lots of water and lots of sleep. That’ll sort you out in a few days.

I expect to see you doing the mandatory 114.5 laps of the pool (not a very big pool granted, but it is a mile) at the weekend. Trust me, you’ll feel terrific after that.

On with the show. I’ve got a day I didn’t expect to have today to catch up with lots of nonsense and try and get ahead of the game.

That would make no sense whatsoever to you, but I know what I mean.

Emergency diet sounds interesting CLP! But at least the weather is nicer to enjoy the walking part of it. Am trying to do more walking myself - and the sun being out definitely helps you want to venture out. Just a shame it's so cold once I leave the flat!!

Alcohol consumption has been nil for the past few weeks in my fitness kick but a night out planned for the weekend with at least one friend in relationship crisis mode will probably mean drinks will be consumed. All in moderation of course!

Can't think what Foxy was on about last night about her photos on the site - I think she looks fab and healthy.

Well, back to the slog of work. Roll on 5pm!

I had to look that up ... Rachebite that is ..... I think it's Rechebite ( abstainers of Drink etc).... You really don't need to punish yourself like that to raise money for charity though, just go on the telly , be yourself and people will give to the charity, there won't be any viewers who say .. Oh dear .. Chris has only lost 12 pounds ..... that's it, no cash from me...:). Do the Yoga thing and stick with it ( don't overdo it though ( why do guys do that) .. use gentle endurance) , drink lots of water .. I mean shed fulls of the stuff and just eat less, of everything; in no time at all those soft bits will be as hard as a Japanese maths exam......trust me :)... I'm an angel.... :)

Have a good time tonight :) Look after Foxy.

Martin.... I don't tell many folk this but when I was 24 ( which is quite a while back now) I was pretty low on life and I thought , is there any point carrying on. My answer at that time, was no... so the next morning I didn't go to work; after my other half went to work, I took a massive overdose of Paracetomol and Codeine Pills ( around 100 pills over a two hour period) and then went to bed for what I thought would be the very last time. No note, no phone calls to anyone before hand, I was pretty sure that the amount of stuff I'd taken would do the job long before my other half got home. Just by chance, my other half came home at lunch-time and found me unconscious on the bedroom floor in a pool of vomit; phoned an ambulance;.. my heart stopped twice on the way to the hospital although I was unaware of that until afterwards..... they had to use the electric shock machine thing to restart my heart, twice on the journey....... my first recollection of being in hospital was waking up , gagging on a hosepipe ( a green one with a funnel attached) - that seemed to last forever...... a while later, a Doctor came to see me and he said, I don't know why you're smiling, you've ruined your liver, you'll be dead within a year and I said back to him, all I have to offer you, is my smile. We didn't speak again. I had an "experience" ( which I won't go into at this time) while I was unconscious, maybe a dream, maybe real .. I don't know, I don't care really because it changed my life beyond all recognition. So, here I am 16 years later .. liver still in tact, living the most fantastic life I could ever have imagined. I was so wrong, when at 24, I concluded that life wasn't worth living.

    Keep smiling.

Aah, the crash diet! Didn't you see Louise Redknapp last night? Just be careful and remember that (despite it's allure), no one will be interested in your body anyway as what you have to say is always the most exciting bit!

What you said to Martin is great and I almost cried! You're exactly right that he needs to be active to keep occupied. I was thinking about how on a weekend my hubby and I tend to have a drink at home and during that time, nothing else gets done. If we stay sober we do SO MUCH more.

It's also about triggers because I always fancy a drink when I watch certain TV progs cos it's what I've always done. However, if I make an effort to watch them with a cup of tea in hand, it's SO much nicer and I wake up the next day feeling so pleased with myself. Sleep after booze isn't sleep at all, it's just unconciousness which can't be good.

I did a huge thing yesterday about Enzo's behaviour to tell you how to deal with the aggression to dogs (I'm a behaviourist - as though I hadn't mentioned it before!) and for some reason it didn't load on. Perhaps cos I included my own email address and that's maybe not allowed.

Anyway, it took ages to type up, but here we go again... (Obviously, if you need to know more, you can't email me unless the board 'manager' has my details)...

Firstly, if Enzo is on a choke chain, get rid of it! The most important thing to remember is that dogs learn BY ASSOCIATION so if everytime he pulls towards a dog, he is effectively being strangled, then he starts to thinks that dogs strangle you, so he decides to get in there first.

Instead, invest in a good quality head collar such as a Halti (size 2 should do it unless he's huge). This gives you better control of where he is looking and also gives you a bit more confidence as he can't pull so much. If you get a halti, try to get the additional strap which fixes to the collar for extra security in case he gets it off.

Next, take LOADS of tasty treats such as bits of cheese, corned beef, ham, chicken etc and as you walk along keep saying "What's this?" and giving him a treat. That way he's focusing on you. When a dog appears, get him to look at you, instead of what's going on around him (if he starts to bark etc, DON'T give him a treat - you'll reward the barking).

If he does start to go mad, just lead him away from the situation and stop the treats. Also, you MUST try to be relaxed - not easy I know - so that (as your guest the other night said) he isn't picking up on your panic. Also, if you pull him towards you, his 'fight or flight' instincts kick in and as he can't get away from the situation, he has to 'fight' instead.

Plus, if you're pulling his head up, the other dog reads this as a 'my dad's bigger than your dad' kind of signal, as though he wants to attack, so they then become defensive.

Practise this regularly and don't avoid dogs or it will never be sorted. Take it one day at a time and use lots of treats to keep him looking at you. When you first get the halti, put it on in the house at feeding/play times so he builds up a pleasant association at first.

Hope all this helps (and pray it's allowed this time cos I'm sick of typing). Good luck and if you need to know more, you can always try a local behaviourist. (I'd love to visit and I'd do it for FREE!!!)

Love you and the show to bits. Go on, have a bar of chocolate!

    Hi Chris et al

Diets don't work. Well, they do, but they don't really. I tried to lose 20 lb in two weeks once on an egg and grapefruit diet that was supposedly endorsed by scientists from 13 countries. Every morning one or two eggs and half a grapefruit. Lunch was some meat and salad, evening meal was something and salad. I lost 2 lb in the first week and put on 2 lb in the second week. Turned out I had been sleepwalking to the fridge each night at 2am and raiding it. No-one told me what I was doing as they didn't believe in the diet. All I heard from Dolores was 'I was just being cruel to be kind.'

If I were you Chris, I wouldn't bother with trying to lose a stone in a week. Wear black on the night, put on some of those special pants that hoist everything upwards, and always stay hidden, whilst on screen, from the mid-gut downwards. If you think this sounds a bit excessive then just remember - it works for Nigella Lawson, week-in, week-out.

    Hope this helps

Every now and then everyone needs to take a step back to re-evaluate and see how they view things. My simple pleasure is delighting in nature. It doesn't go any deeper than that, but a beautiful sunset or sunrise, the singing of the birds, the way a cornfield blows...all lighter than a teabag, and all wonderful for me.

I'm at work during the day and have little time to blog other than in tea breaks/lunchtime etc, so, often my contribution is rushed and poorly written. The kissing preference thing the other day is a good example of that. I really enjoy tea, so I was trying to compare that with something which for me was just as pleasant. I'd had that one experience a while back with a complete stranger, which came to mind and compared favourably.

Sometimes you hear people saying "I just want to be happy" but when asked, don't know what it is that would make them happy. That of course is the right answer. There is nothing they can buy, build, bake, drive, climb or conquer that will make them happy. They already are happy and just haven't noticed because of all the stuff they've bought, built, driven climbed and conquered. Life is only a struggle if you're trying to make it something that isn't living.

Alcoholics are, in many ways very special people. We are the way we are because of our genetic makeup. It is because of this that we are prepared to go the extra mile, we are often creative and hugely successful when sober. You only have to look at the many celebs that have packed up the booze.

I don't get to read the blog everyday but after reading Chris's comment today and some others wandered what your entry had been so I looked back. I'm sorry to hear you're having a tough time.

Alcohol can be such a bad friend at times, I have an on off relationship with it myself, I love a drink or two but don't know where to draw the line!! I have a very bad relationship with my mother(can't bring myself to call her mum!) and when I was 17/18 I found a friend in alcohol,it just took me to a nicer place, my escape route.

I could write a book about my antics whilst under the influence and some are very funny but there is a serious side to it.

I am lucky enough to be married to a wonderful husband who loves a drink but knows where to draw the line, have only seem him plastered a couple of times in 13 years. He doesn't quite understand that once I have the taste I am away. but he looks after me. I would like to call myself a social drinker as I don't drink at odd times of the day or hide it but once I have the taste, I'm off.

However my friend and I set ourselves a challenge for new year and decided we wouldnt drink for 6 weeks!!! Guess what we did it. My husband and I also had quite a bad car accident in that time and I still didn't have a drink. I made sure that I had some other non alcoholic drink in the fridge that would be my treat for the evening or a mug of hot chocolate.Just pour it and don't think too much about it.

I am quite a determined person and couldn't give up on a challenge, it worked for 6 weeks for me and I felt fab,(slept so much better, skin was glowing just felt good!!) still thoroughly enjoyed a social life, which I thought I wouldn't without a drink and never knew Sunday mornings could be so bright and cheery!!

Anyway keep that mind focused, you don't need alcohol it's not a friend. Find something to keep your mind busy when thinking of alcohol.

    Best wishes

I think it's partly that it gives me confidence (until the next day when I remember something I've said and the paranoia sets in) and also that some of my friends seem to prefer me after I've had a drink. I think if I gave up completely I'd stop going out completely, because i find it really boring without the aid of a drink. Does anyone else feel that need for a drink to take the edge off things?

Mariella, glad to hear it! Hope it stays that way too. I used to dive into 12ft of water from 15ft, but I can't even begin to imagine the devastation of that much water in my house!

...and to you all...spesh Gorgeous DWNB! I feel I must share this with you. I don't recall seeing in on here before, but please accept my most 'umble if it has been, or indeed if you have seen it elsewhere...

A 98 year old woman wrote this to her bank. The bank manager thought it amusing enough to have it published in The Times.

    Dear Sir,

I am writing to thank you for bouncing my cheque with which I endeavoured to pay my plumber last month.

By my calculations, three 'nanoseconds' must have elapsed between his presenting the cheque and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honour it. I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my Pension, an arrangement which, I admit, has been in place for only eight years. You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting my account ÂŁ30 by way of penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank.

My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me to rethink my errant financial ways.

I noticed that whereas I personally attend to your telephone calls and letters, when I try to contact you, I am confronted by the impersonal,
overcharging, pre-recorded, faceless entity which your bank has become.

From now on, I, like you, choose only to deal with a flesh-and-blood person. My mortgage and loan payments will therefore and hereafter no
longer be automatic, but will arrive at your bank by cheque, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your bank whom you must nominate.

Be aware that it is an offence under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope. Please find attached an Application Contact Status which I require your chosen employee to complete.

I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank knows about me, there is no alternative.

Please note that all copies of his or her medical history must be countersigned by a Solicitor, and the mandatory details of his/her financial situation (income, debts, assets and liabilities) must be accompanied by documented proof.

In due course, I will issue your employee with a PIN number which he/she must quote in dealings with me.

I regret that it cannot be shorter than 28 digits but, again, I have modelled it on the number of button presses required of me to access my
account balance on your phone bank service. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Let me level the playing field even further. When you call me, press buttons as follows:

1-- To make an appointment to see me.
2-- To query a missing payment.
3-- To transfer the call to my living room in case I am there.
4-- To transfer the call to my bedroom in case I am sleeping.
5-- To transfer the call to my toilet in case I am attending to nature.
6-- To transfer the call to my mobile phone if I am not at home.
7-- To leave a message on my computer (a password to access my computer is required. A password will be communicated to you at a later
    date to the Authorised Contact.)
8-- To return to the main menu and to listen to options 1 through 8
9-- To make a general complaint or inquiry, the contact will then be put on hold, pending the attention of my automated answering service.
While this may, on occasion, involve a lengthy wait, uplifting music will play for the duration of the call.

Regrettably, but again following your example, I must also levy an establishment fee to cover the setting up of this new arrangement.

May I wish you a happy, if ever so slightly less prosperous, New Year.

    Your Humble Client

Remember: This was written by a 98 year old woman; DOESN'T SHE MAKE YOU PROUD!!?)

In response to Em M about nights out being boring without the aid of alcohol, I was forced to give up the falling down water some 7 years ago owing to medication taken for a skin disorder and find that I no longer need it to enjoy myself. I find that if the atmosphere and comapny are good I can feel quite drunk on this alone. I've often staggered from our local working men's club after a night out and headed for my car hoping that one if the local constabulary do not spot me as I look quite inebriated but not a drop of the evil liqour has passed my lips! Saying this, on hot sunny days a cold pint of my favourite lager St Ella would really hit the spot but I know I'm better off without it!

Hi, don't comment very often but I'm sure you like to know when you've inspired someone to do something, I don't see my friends often enough and hardly ever go out so I've launched the Thirsty, Third, Thursday club. The founder members are myself and two close friends, we've committed to meeting every third thursday for drinks, food and chat. It's extended to our mutual friends but they can drop in and out as they please. I'm very excited about it just not sure if we'll be able to say Thirsty, Third, Thursday Club after a few drinks

Thanks for the wake up call and good luck with the diet.

I need some help with a tiny problem, which regards Fox the Fox, its the song. I know its 'the sharpest eyes, keenest nose and PRICKEST ears, however my lovely man is convinced its the Quickest Ears (whoever has had quick ears?) but every tea-time he insists on singing it wrong!!

Thanks in advance for your help with that.

Nicki. lovecats, but I'm afraid your boy is correct...look upon it as being the quickest to hear something and react on the sound...maybe???

From a superb film called 'The Court Jester' starring Mr Danny Kaye, the lyrics were written by his wife, Sylvia Fine.

Only the sharpest eye, the keenest nose, the quickest ear and the fleetest toes
    Can ever outfox the Fox

Only the stoutest arm, the bravest heart, with a magic charm and a good head start
    Can ever outfox the Fox

Those who try to tangle with my daring do
End up at the angle that herring do

Only the sprightliest sprite, the nimblest elf, a wicked old witch or the devil himself can ever outfox the Fox

Whenever they try to find me
They find me where I am not
I'm hither and yond, I'm there and gone, I'm Johnny-not-on-the spot!
I'm out on a limb they think!
I'm down on the ground in a wink
My enemies say "Gadzooks! It's spooks!"
    Shivering in their socks
They know that they'll never, I'm far to clever
    They'll never outfox the Fox!

    et voila...

Oh, and you're all singing it now aren't you!

    Best wishes Foxy

Chris I have the ULTIMATE DIETING TOP TIP -

EAT EVERYTHING SITTING IN YOUR PANTS ONLY.

I discovered this tip last summer while trying to eat a chip butty in a bikini at home on a hot summer's day.
It's really hard to justify eating badly when you can see your thighs clearly, it makes you actually want to go out and buy salad.

May take more than a week though!

I am pregnant now and it's great as I can't see much of anything except my bump so I can have a few months off as long as I stay away from too many mirrors.

    hi chris

if you want to give up the alcohol for a few days to help with the weight loss and increase the exercise, no problem neither will do you any harm. BUT please do NOT give up the starchy foods these are your body's best source of energy and the one we find easiest to use. Your best bet is to make sure you're having regular meals, all with starchy foods, plenty of fruit & veg, cut down on the fatty & sugary foods and reduce your portion sizes of protein foods, keep them to 2 helpings a day and a helping should be no larger than the palm of your hand.

All that happens if you crash diet is that when you put the weight back on ( which you will) your percentage body fat goes up making it harder to lose weight long term. The jockey you had on last night was right when he said do not go on a diet as you immediatly crave what you think you can't have. the best idea is to try to make permanant changes towards a healthy eating pattern as part of a healthy life style.

healthy life style does not equal boring diet I love good food and wine and have both, but just not all the time.

in case you're wondering why i've replied i'm a QUALIFIED registered dietitian and one of the biggest problems we face is explaining to people that crash dieiting doesn't work and that starchy foods are good for you. perhaps you need to contact the British Dietetic Association and get someone on the program like you did with the blood presssure thing the other week. alternativly you could go the their web-site, where you will find lots of free fact sheets about nutrition.

    cheers
