LATE BUT STILL MEANING IT

Chris Evans | 11:42 UK time, Thursday, 18 January 2007

Sorry I’m a little late today I had to take a patient to the doctors
.

The Beetle, The Bug, the Sky Blue Baby has been having trouble with her timing, so this morning she and I limped to a garage and booked her in for a little tlc.

She had in fact been stood for over four weeks in the same spot whilst I was away over the Christmas period and as a result had incurred a flat off side front tyre. Why do tyres go flat when a car stands for a while, I’ve never understood that. The £3.50 foot pump did it’s job though and I’m expecting a call about her later on this afternoon.

My it’s a windy one again out there. Since I returned home I closed the blinds and I’ve turned the heating up, on days like today it’s up to us to create our own world whilst God sorts his out.

I nipped INto the chemist whilst I was out and about, my throat’s gone mad. The nice lady has given me something to gargle and you know I haven’t gargled for years. I found myself a little rusty gagging for breath now and again, isn’t it funny how the strangest things remind us how we’ve changed.

How good was the BLOOD PRESSURE doctor last night ? And yes for the record she was very attractive. After the success of “the expert”, we are thinking about having “an expert” in every Wednesday. We need some ideas for who you might want to hear, so feel free to let flow. I’m thinking dogs next week !

I believe you’re meeting up tonight, well some of you at least, good luck with that, I personally think it will change the way you interact and the blog will lose some of it’s openness, honesty and specialness, as agendas are unavoidably bound to be formed but it’s your choice so there you go.

    Morning (just)

A dog expert would be great - us bloggers seem to love our dogs (I'm getting a new one when we're moved and settled into our new house) and an expert on doggy stuff would be fun. It may alienate some listeners who have cats though (alternative pets are available!). Maybe a pet expert would be more equitable?

I do think that it's nice to have a meet up fpr the blog although I know what you mean about changes etc. after it - I'm not going as it's a bit of a way for me but I do worry that those who can't attend will miss out somehow - what if there's a new in joke that we don't get?

I suppose we're relying on maintaining the openness and honesty that has pervaded the blog so far. Right must go - am about to fill in a 'don't tell me that doesn't make you feel better' request.

I do hope your car is ok. Mine is off to toyota heaven this weekend. Bless her, she's gone past the stage where she can be useful as a car, and is now providing seagulls with somewhere to stand on while they look down the road...

Blood pressure doctor was superb. Had the show on whilst rushing about the place prior to getting a haircut, so heard it in bits and pieces! Glad Rebecca is so well too!

Blinding idea about the Wednesday expert. Just think of all the milyons of things people are experts in...MASSIVE. Your researchers are going to have their work cut out, coz you've gotta have experts who are out of the ordinary...but if you're gonna have Dogs next week, please can I put in a vote for Cats the week after?

    Hi Chris (and everyone),

Hope your wee car gets better soon! I know nothing about cars and in fact stopped driving about 15 years ago, after almost being flattened by an articulated lorry!

Missed the show last night, but yes I think getting an expert on each week would be a great idea. How about someone who can tell us how best to pay off Christmas just past!

I do see your point about the OAMC tonight and I share your reservations. It's human nature though to want to meet people you have been interacting with, isn't it? I would think that the people that show up tonight will know instictively whether this is something that will work in the future. I would love to go along, but I know that I would be a little apprehensive that my opinions of the individuals involved might change - and that they might not like me once we met. So much of the success of this blog is because we don't REALLY know each other!

It's all very interesting and quite exciting and who knows how it will turn out!

P.S. Of course, I am thinking of everyone attending tonight. I hope you all have a terrific time and find yourselves bonding! Sooo looking forward to hearing all about it tomorrow!

    Hi Chris,

I feel you pain with your Blue Bug, mine was an Ivy Green VW Bug 1962... Cost the earth to fix it every month or so but it was so worth it during those summer months of crusing around feeling like nothing in the world could harm us... Other than the Bug stopping on the M40!

I wouldn't have changed my first car for the world though and I'm planning to get myself a project Camper when, space, time & money allow it!

I missed the Road Kill Chef on Tuesday night, was it any good?

I've been reading "Jimmy Doherty's on the Farm" its a fantastic book, tales of pigs escaping and wild parties in the barn! Its inspired me to grow and be more active with the earth, vegetables, chickens etc... I'm looking forward to the possibilty of eating an egg from my own chicken!

Hope the world is treating you all with respect!

I think you should get that woman in off the "its me or the dog programme". Bloody hell she can sort dogs out in one click of a finger.... I think she'll be able to tell you loads of things.

I don't know about tyres either.. which is probably why mine are always lower than they should be.

Is strangely not windy here in Ayrshire. am thinking we are in eye of storm, maybe it will come this afternoon. Has been snowing all around too, but not here. All good tho.

    Hiya everyone,

Short staffed in work - the dreaded lurgy has struck and they are dropping like flies so I'm rushing about but thought I'd have a breather and post this.

CLP - I agree with you about the meeting tonight and that it may change things but I hope not.

Loved Talk to the Animals last night and the blood pressure doctor. I had high blood pressure a couple of years ago caused by type 2 diabetes. Now 2 years later I've lost 5 and a half stone and control the diabetes with diet (all fresh stuff nothing processed) and the blood pressure is now OK. It was a lot easier than I expected and I feel great.

    Better go....

CLP - I hope your throat gets better soon - can't have you off the air - not so soon after coming back to us!! I'd recommend pouring some salt into warm water and gargling with that every few hours. I've suffered from tonsillitis and throat problems since my early teens and although it takes some getting used to, it's very effective, especially last thing at night - guaranteed to anaesthetise the throat to give you at least some sleep!

I hope the blog doesn't lose its openness for some people, but you've got a point Mr E.

Someone ‘up there’ is not a happy bunny today. It’s certainly a-howlin’ in Rudgwick, even had to get up in the night and Blu-Tac the letterbox down. And now the rain is horizontal.

So. The day has finally arrived. Excited? I am. How do you spot a shlogger in a pub full of people? I assume that Moose will not be sporting tell-tale antlers, although Gaby may arrive wrapped in a Reading FC scarf and I will, of course, have the lovely Mrs MfR on my arm, although that doesn’t help you one jot.

If, as planned, we arrive prior to 7.00, I will look out for anyone plugged in to a radio catching the show or tapping away at a laptop, as no self-respecting shlogger could possibly be torn away from the messiah during service.

Failing that, I shall look for the signs. Remember, and this is the scary thing, over the past few months we’ve all revealed a great deal about ourselves, more than perhaps we would had we known we’d meet face to face one day. Without realising it, we all actually know each rather well.

    Maybe. We shall see.

A hint of disapproval from Mr E? I understand where you are coming from, but the step into the unknown is just too tempting for some of us.

I have resorted to eating mayonnaise and teabags as I cannot run the risk of being blown away if I step outside. This doesn’t set me up well for this evening, but as I shall be sticking to the orange juice it doesn’t really matter.

Have a happy ‘Mork & Mindy’ Thirsty Thursday.

    See everyone who dares later.

So I ended up with a grade 1 side and back and very short on top, still the girls in the office like it , though good old mom says I now look like Magwitch from great expectations, moms always say it like it is thats why we love em.

    OAMC
I guess we all know the risks, having discussed it on here. I've always been one for trying to go the most difficult route possible. It's going to be difficult for us attendees to keep (or even improve) the openness, honesty etc on the blog after meeting. But if we all resolve to do just that, it's possible and I think we should go for it! I am already planning some INCREASED openness and honesty after tonight from me!

Well, not surprisingly, there WAS a common theme within our blogs today...the OAMC!!!

Tomorrow may be a very different challenge for me to tune in to...but I'll give it a go.

We'll try to keep "in" jokes to a minimum for those not attending. I'm sure attendees will be sharing tomorrow anyway, so they'll be outed (the jokes) by this time tomorrow...not so long to wait, is it?

Matt from Rudgwick - I hope you've seen the oamc blog...further detailed moose recognition instructions are on there. Follow link above, then go to my profile and you can go to the oamc from there. Also, I have my mini FM radio with me today - I shall be plugged in!!!

And if it all goes horribly wrong, you can all blame me, I shall retire from this blog disgracefully, and then rejoin with a new pseudonym, pretending to be a virgin blogger again!

    1) Page yourself over the intercom. Don't disguise your voice.

    2) Find out where your boss shops and buy exactly the same outfits. Wear them one day after you boss does. This is especially effective if your boss is a different gender.

    3) Make up nicknames for all your coworkers and refer to them only by these names. "That's a good point, Sparky." "No, I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with you there, Cha-cha."

    4) Send e-mail to the rest of the company telling them exactly what you're doing. For example: "If anyone needs me, I'll be in the bathroom."

    5) Hi-Lite your shoes. Tell people you haven't lost them as much since you did this.

    6) While sitting at your desk, soak your fingers in Palmolive liquid. Call everyone Madge.

    7) Hang mosquito netting around your cubicle. When you emerge to get coffee or a printout or whatever, slap yourself randomly the whole way.

    8) Put a chair facing a printer. Sit there all day and tell people you're waiting for your document.

    9) Every time someone asks you to do something, anything, ask them if they want fries with that.

    10) Send e-mail back and forth to yourself engaging yourself in an intellectual debate. Forward the mail to a co-worker and ask her to settle the disagreement.

    11) Encourage your colleagues to join you in a little synchronized chair-dancing.

    12) Put your trash can on your desk. Label it "IN."

    13) Feign an unnatural and hysterical fear of staplers.

    14) Send e-mail messages saying there's free pizza or donuts or cake in the lunch room. When people drift back to work complaining that they found none, lean back, pat your stomach and say, "Oh you've got to be faster than that."

    15) Put decaf in the coffee maker for three weeks. Once everyone has withdrawn from caffeine addiction, switch to espresso.

Hazel Love- thanks for the recipe sounds fab! and in return here's mine:

Finely chop a savoy cabbage and par boil for about 5 minutes. drain and put to one side.

Boil some potatoes drain off, add some salt ground pepper, milk, a dash of fresh cream, some wholegrain mustard and chopped chives and wizz in the food blender till really creamy.

Heat up a large heavy bottomed saucepan. Take some lardons (or alternative copped up bacon bits like the ones I get from a cheap supermarket) and fry off in their own fat until they start to brown. Add the cabbage and stir fry adding salt & ground black pepper to taste. Once the cabbage is cooked to your liking add a glass of white wine and a tablespoon of fresh cream, stir for a further few minutes before serving with the creamy mash.... Delish!!!!!!!! Enjoy!

Practice was resumed when the RFU decided the players were unlikely to encounter the substance again!

    2. Andy Robinson takes the England team for a training session, first up he tells the players to take up their normal positions, so they all go behind the posts to wait for the conversion!!

Meant to say yesterday Chris, we have our own sauna, feel welcome to drop in anytime you want to use it. Our friends have one near the lake and often have a swim in it after the sauna, especially at midsummer.

Thank you Cathmel and Sallycat for asking. Cathmel I have made a couple of posts this week and said hello to mwk when she asked after me (which was nice) but alas I did not pop in at all last week and feel that there is an awful lot of chat to catch up with!

On Monday I got the internet all set up to listen to Chris's first day back and the connection failed. I tried several times to get it back but to no avail. I even missed the first song!

I also missed Tuesday's show as shopping all day. Have tried out the skis today as we got some more snow last night. I think it will be a while before I feel confident on them! I managed to listen in last night.

Amanda #34 yesterday or today, can't remember re dogs, people here in Sweden we've noticed when walking our sadly missed Clive off the lead, will generally stop and just stand still and offer their hand to the dog if it wants to come up to them. Only once the dog has sniffed them first and is happy with the person will the person stroke them and talk to them on the dog's terms.

All the best for tonight, let us know how it goes tomorrow.

As he caught himself by grabbing the banister, his body swung around and he landed heavily on his rump. A whiskey bottle in each back pocket broke and made the landing especially painful.

Managing not to yell, Flynn sprung up, pulled down his pants, and looked in the hall mirror to see that his butt cheeks were cut and bleeding. He managed to quietly find a full box of Band-Aids and began putting a Band-Aid as best he could on each place he saw blood.

He then hid the now almos t empty Band-Aid box and shuffled and stumbled his way to bed.

In the morning, Flynn woke up with searing pain in both his head and butt and Mary staring at him from across the room.

She said, "You were drunk again last night weren't you?"

Flynn said, "Why you say such a mean thing?"

"Well," Mary said, "it could be the open front door, it could be the broken glass at the bottom of the stairs, it could be the drops of blood trailing through the house, it could be your bloodshot eyes, but mostly.....it's all those Band-Aids stuck on the hall mirror.

You must, must, must get some chickens of your own, there is no tast like eggs from the garden.
I used to have 3 hens, only bantums as my garden is not very big, they are no trouble at all, they had a little house at the end of the garden with a couple of next boxes in, every night they would take themselves off to bed as soon as dusk arrived, then I would let them out in the morning and they would spend the day pottering around the garden. I used to feed them chicken pellets but they mainly ate anything they could get hold of. After you've had eggs produced in that way you'll be amazing what its possible to produce from a few pellets, couple of worms and the odd earwig!!

I would strongly recomend the breed Buff Orpington, they are a stunning auburn colour and love to be picked up and cuddled! (I was very close to my 'girls')

So I have decided that it's not going to happen TODAY. Note the emphasis. Not that it's not going to happen. But simply not today.

Anyway, disappointing. Not to be outdone, I have decided to come back here:

I am not disagreeing with what Chris said per se - I just read his bit about the potential effect the meeting up would have on the blog - I havent read any of your comments - I only have a second to post so will read them later........

......I think the main thing that we would have wanted to ensure (having met up) was that the blog DOES remain as special as it is and that there werent cliques of us talking about the meeting-up and what was discussed/happened there etc. ie if we wanted to carry on with other agendas/friendships/ meeting up , we could exchange email addresses at the get togethers for chats between ourselves. There are some people (me inluded) who have little running jokes with fellow bloggers but that is inevitable to a certain extent because we have been communicating for so long and so regularly. However, the comments aimed at specific people are never intended to alienate or exclude others. I'm not sure where I am going with all this really and I'm sure Chris knows better than moi - just thought I'd say all that. I once spoke to someone for quite a few months over the internet, and was absoultely convinced that I had met my soul mate (looked a bit like Chris which is what did it for me!). Our conversations were playful, inventive, funny, intelligent and poignant. Eventually we met up for a romantic weekend, both of us vowing that nothing could change the way we felt about each other. It was possibly the most excruciatingly embarrassing 24 hours for both of us! We had revealed and shared so much, but I had built up a fantasy of the person I was meeting, that I realise now could never have matched up. He felt the same way too. Looking back, I'm glad I had the fantasy of a perfect soul-mate, I'm also glad that I found out, otherwise it would be like never opening a scrummy looking Christmas present.

Good evening, dear Christoff, and fellow bloggers and blogettes!

I'm back! On a new laptop (thanks hubby!)

What do you mean, 'We didn't know you'd gone!?' I'm so hurt!

Great show this evening .... as always ... but why are you celebrating Burn's Night a week early? And there I was going to invite you for haggis, neeps and tatties next Thursday! I thought Moose could address the haggis?

Poor Christopher with a sore throat ... make sure you nip it in the bud! Here's a couple of remedies to try :-

Add two drops of tea tree, ginger, sandalwood or geranium essential oil to œ ounce of warm water and gargle - or add the drops to a tablespoon of honey and swallow that.

Take two or more cloves of garlic, crushed or whole, at the first sign of a sore throat and continue eating two cloves a day until your symptoms clear up. It's ok .... your listerners won't suffer ... just the rest of the team if you breath on them! And I guess it's not very attractive to the girlies if you have any romantic plans for the weekend (well ... have you, honey?!)!

Sage good for a sore throat - chop two teaspoons of fresh leaves, pour boiling water over them and steep for ten minutes. Strain the tea to remove the leaves and cool before using as a mouthwash. Repeat the gargles as necessary for a maximum of two to three days.

Juice three pineapple rings together with a Œ-inch-thick slice of fresh ginger for a great soothing juice.

Hope your sore throat isn't the sign of illnes ..... you are not allowed to desert us again!

So, as I haven't been aroundfor a while (oh, how I've missed you and the bloggers and blogettes!), who all is meeting up tonight? Any chance of a Scottish meet?

Got to go just now - hubby wants me to go cook the sea bass!

    Group hug!

Susan S ... in Inverness .... with no snow! :-(

Chris, I hope your throat’s better now and did the gargle work? Your blog today was really interesting, especially your comments about this evening’s OAMC meeting. One of things I’ve loved about your blog and all the resulting comments, is the anonymity of the way in which we’re able to communicate openly.

As it turns out it looks as though the dreadful weather has put paid to the plans, which must be very disappointing for all concerned – so my commiserations to all those not going after all.

Haven’t got any ideas for an expert, but I’m sure plenty will wing their merry way to you. I’ve missed your last few broadcasts and feel very miffed about it, but hope to catch tomorrow’s.

I agree with all the comments about the lack of a simple ‘thank you’ for a job well done. Too many bosses/managers spend all their time complaining or demoralizing staff instead of giving encouragement. As mentioned earlier the culprits actually feel threatened by good staff so react in the way they do. Haven’t any of them realized yet that people can only put up with such treatment for a limited period of time and will finally just vote with their feet and look for another job. And then where would all these companies end up.

Having read about the problems of travel around the country and certainly in London, I would like to ask a very simple question. It might be either extremely naïve or cynical of me, but how on earth is London going to deal with the extra pressure on the transport system during the Olympics? I know there are wonderful plans and promises, but I am concerned. It’s difficult enough now for the people having to commute into London everyday, even without the extremes of weather, so what will it be like then?

Jillygoat – glad you’re OK and it’s great reading your posts again. I’ve missed everybody and it is wonderful getting in touch again.

Jax – I’ll be thinking of you tonight and let’s hope it has just been sore muscles. Fingers crossed. You’re right – where is Tracey-Ann.

    Tracey-Ann – are you OK?

AS – like your PS and that will be winging its way around my email list.

DWNB – glad the headache disappeared and that you’ve had a good day.

JMcC – another vote for you has just been sent.

Tinsel – nice to meet you and hope your recent arrival stays in his new home. Little darling. Good luck in your new job and – most important of all – good luck in you new life. You’ll make a wonderful life for yourself and I wish you much happiness.

Dissing Dave – 135 - thank you so much for your comments and they’re thought provoking to say the least. As you said, bullying is unforgivable, even if the victim retracted the accusation later in the day. Mind you I haven’t got a television so didn’t see the incident and wouldn’t watch Big Brother even if I had, but that doesn’t alter anything really. Good job actually that we don’t all like the same things anyway. Thanks DD for your interesting post.

Hazel Love – recipe sounds delicious, so I’ll be adding that to my list of things to try.

    Dear Sparkle #121
I reiterate the comments of Gaby (#124) and sallycat (#125).

I have two daughters, now in their 30's, and my greatest fear for them was the growing drug culture. Happily, perhaps as we live in a rural county, the street offerings were much reduced.

My next dreaded fear is for my grandchildren; Grandson #1 is 14 + years and at a comprehensive school where there is a minor drug problem. So far, he is anti smoking (my vice) and anything to do with drugs. He is aware that his Mum (single) enjoys a glass of red, and that I (Granny) enjoy a glass of white whilst Grandad sleeps! My younger grandson is 18 months old and couldn't give a damn what his parents are doing (so long as they are there for him) never mind what his grandparents are up to!

I am not making light of your problem; I don't know how to help you, but like was suggested earlier, I bet someone on this blog can help. Please keep "refreshing" the blog and read (and "refresh") Chris's daily subject.

Sparkle - my BEST wishes; being a Mum is the hardest /easiest thing we will ever do.

Sparkle, blimey this parenthood thing is a tuff one, and i am not that long into it either, i did want to respond to you though.

The hardest thing i anticipate about when my mancub gets older is the fact that sometimes, i wont be able to do anything for him - because he will have to make his own choices. I know that i will feel totally at a loss, and want to scoop him up and protect him because i love him so much, but the more i do that, the more it could push him away.

So i hope that if that ever happens to me, i feel that i can put my thoughts and emotions on paper for him, to explain how important he is to me and how much respect and love he should have for himself because he is an amazing person who has so much potential in life and that if he wants me to, i can help him choose to make a change. I would leave it for him and then sit and wait, praying that he makes the best choice.

then when HE is ready, i will scoop him up and protect him and make sure that, having made the choice, he has all the support in the world he needs to make a change.

I am only talking in the first person, cos i dont think its appropriate for me to say that this is what you should do, but i really hope that something i say is a help.

Perhaps you could check out the internet and look for a counselling service that deals with this issue from your side. The more information and support you have, the more you can be there for your 'little boy' when he is ready.

..nothing is my opinion. I am worried for you as I Know what my son has put my good lady through. Get yourself to your GP and ask no demand help. Your GP will get you in contact with your local drugs group who will be able to give you good advice as what not to do especially. For example we were told never to give him money. My son has a car and as with many people there is always too much month for the money. He will ask for help with petrol and offer to pay us back. We never just give him £20 I go with him to the petrol station and pay for the petrol otherwise he will put a £10 in and I do not need to tell you where the other ten pound will go. :-( I have a draw full of drug testing kits which I bought and if he wants to be treated normally he has to prove he is clean first. Some times we have to be cruel to be kind.

You say you do not know what to do. Let me tell you I think you do as you have just come on here asking for advice and that to me is the key because for all of the love you will show your son you do not need to face this alone.
