I really like this song, to me it's worth four srtars, but it's undeniably easy to see why someone would hate her and this song. Her voice is a bit marmite isn't it?

.....but the music did reach me, as I guess it reached the reviewer too. He just can't face up to it. Throw away your X-factor blockage and accept that this is a fantastic record on its own merit, probably the best this year, and as it happens it is a triumph of genre-splicing. Just relax and enjoy it. It won't harm you.

Diana Vickers - Once

I first heard this song months ago , and I have been litening to it intently for a while .
It was written by Cathy Dennis and E.G White , and it fits Diana's vocal phrasing perfectly .
A great intro leads into Diana'a distinctive vocal which is sure to divide people . There's a touch of the Ellie Goulding in her lilt , and one of my male friends can do a fantastic Diana singing impression , which creases up his audience . Agreed she has a "marmite " voice , but personally it charms me .
Once boasts one helluva huge chorus hook , a lilting middle eight , and a great video .
It sounds very at home at radio , and is already on many A lists . including Radio 1 .
This is a wonderful debut single , and I predicted a top 20 hit for the song , about a month ago , due to that chorus , where the strident guitars add some attitude and adds to the songs undeniable appeal.

Now , I tip it as a probable top 10 , it has wonderful commercial possibilities .

The song itself is pretty decent, but I cannot listen to Diana's voice. I don't get why some people say "Diana's voice is good because it's different." Really? In some cases that's true, but hers is just plain horrible. Fair enough some people might like it, but it'll certainly put more people off than gain fans.

Thing is, she already has a massive leg-up because of her being on X Factor a few years ago. People already know who she is and we all know that commercial radio are obsessed with anything to do with X Factor so she has a big advantage there. She's also had a lot of money thrown at her album so they weren't going to let it go unnoticed.

Let's face it - if she wasn't 'That Diana Girl Off X Factor', would anyone care about her music? I doubt it. She'll probably go to no.1 because of the hype but that's what happens.

In my view , It's irrespective as to who sings Once , the fact remains that it is a very good song with a standout chorus , and that is why it will chart high .
Once fits the Radio 1 playlist superbly, never mind who sings it , it's all about the appeal of the song .

If commercial radio were obsessed with X Factor , why did Laura White's debut single fail to hit the radio airplay top 30 , and fail to make the Radio 1 playlists ?

If what you say is true , then both artists should have been all over the radio , as they are former X Factor singers.
It never happened though .

The answer is that both songs were clearly not in the same league as Once in terms of production , chorus , appeal ,and credibility .
It's nearly all about the song .

Diana's debut album Songs From The Tainted Cherry Tree is released on May 3rd .

Though I agree with Spirit and OddOne that it's a good song I'm pretty sure that Diana wouldn't have got a first single as strong as Once if it hadn't been for her appearance on X-Factor.

You can't blame people for sometimes being bitter about X-Factor contestants as they get an unfair amount of commercial coverage and advertising leading up their releases, the sort that other artists couldn't manage in their wildest dreams. Also when high quality pop songs like O.N.E - Yeasayer, 1901 - Phoenix and Valentine - Delays fail to make the top 20, whilst X-Factor contestants spend most of their time parading around the top 10 with much poorer songs, you can't help but feel like there's little justice in the world.

In a fair world the amount of publicity and chart positions of a single should be judged on the quality, yes I know it's all subjective but some songs are obviously better than others, instead on how many covers you sang on a tv show. Then again in that fair world Once will still be a hit. 4 STARS

The song is pure brilliance, and whilst Diana's voice is 'marmite' as I earlier said, I guess I forgot to mention that I love her voice. Just thought I'd clear that up.

And for the record, I do here a touch of Ellie Goulding's voice too, spirit. ;)

X Factor is open to anyone to apply , just like anyone can form a band , or make music in their bedroom and send it to record companies .

How much do acts want it ?

I have never been on X Factor , but it seems you certainly need guts , hard graft , nerves of steel ,talent , charisma , soul and the likeability factor to win the thing , or even get to the final.

Fair play to Diana for applying and getting as far as she did , should people feel less of X Factor contestants because they never toiled mentally or physically through perceived hardship and pain outside of television ?

Surely if you are hungry for success in any profession , you will use all the routes and chances at your disposal , and you take them when the opportunity arises .
X Factor is viewed by up to 20 million viewers , so a clever, talented aspirational singer may rightly view this as an opportunity too good to refuse .


It didn't happen by magic that Diana did well, she put in a lot of hard work to get where she did , as did Leona as did Alexandra and JLS ETC .

I am sure when Alexandra was offered a record contract , she never said :

"No thanks , I want to struggle in pubs and clubs for a while , so I can gain some credibility . "

The most important thing is when you are in the public eye , you produce first rate songs , that give pleasure to a lot of listeners , and Bad Boys and Once certainly do this for many .

It was Diana's hard work , talent , soul and guts that got her to the final of X Factor , and thus signed by RCA Records , who could see she had appeal .
No one handed it to her on a plate , she worked hard and earnt it .

Like I said - Diana has had a LOT of money thrown at her album - just look at some of the names she's 'worked with'. They were never going to let it go unnoticed.

But like you said spirit - people like Alexandra Burke just wanted success, they wanted to be famous and be a popstar, whatever way they could. They aren't in it for the sake of the music, or to try and be creative or offer something to it - they just want to be on tv and to be no.1 in the charts. I don't see how it's a good thing that most kids seem to just want that these days.

I know spirit, I know. I went to Cornwall for 10 days, nothing too flashy but I like English holidays when the sun is out. Which of course it wasn't, in the most part, but oh well, I had a good break anyway. I would have invited you all, but there was no room in the car I'm afraid... ;)


As for Diana, well i'm not sure how much money was involved Kutox, i'd like to think that writers like Cathy Dennis and Ellie Goulding wrote more for a love of new music and an exciting artist than a big paycheck, but I may be mistaken. It did however have a lot of time put into it , nearly a year more than Alexandras (on the same series), which can be seen as theatre commitments but that doesn't take a year, on top of the year after the show that Alrxandra also took to make the album. She took her time with this, where Quigg released his 'thing' ( I don't know what it was, nor do I want to) very shortly after the end of the show I seem to remember. The results in comparison are for all to see.

Turns out he only recorded covers of the songs he did on X Factor to put on his EP.

Cannot wait for Diana's rather badly named 'Songs From The Tainted Cherry Tree' LP. Don't bite me, it's personal opinion.

I think this is a good song. I dont really watch X factor, but obviously cant avoid it as everyone else does watch it, so i knew who diana was. I like her voice, although i think it will limit her music style, but if she makes good tracks then thats fine.

I dont really mind that she comes from X factor, weve seen more flops from reality shows than success, so we know it is definitely not a short-cut to pop stardom. The fact she has gone away for so long to work on a good album gives her more respect. also, its about the song at the end of the day. if its a good song performed well, dont care who sang it.

expected it to get 4 stars, but 3 is good. will chart in top 5.

I heard her live on Blue Peter yesterday (YES I STILL WATCH IT IT'S LIKE GOD)

Anyway, she's sounding much better then her X Factor days, its annoying because it seems to producers has edited her voice to sound even more... Diana-ish, so when she sings it live she's actually smoother than the recording and she's got a much more powerful set of pipes on her now, really blasting the notes out towards the end of the song.

I think this song may just be a 5 star song now! OOER! -Likes

I used to think this was a 5 star song but, much like Bleeding Love, once the novelty of 'look it's an X-Factor song that isn't rubbish' wears off it loses some of it's appeal.

Im gonna go into several posts incase I swear or something that will get deleted. Also several topics..

I've always felt a little sorry for pop stars that are found through shows such as X Factor. Alexandra Burke was on Radio1 today doing some guff with Tim Westwood about local heroes. Basically, career not doing so well. They played her new song after her bit, reminding me why her career isn't doing so well.

I actually don't really feel sorry for such pop stars, when I think about it properly.. because without shows such as X Factor they would still be scrubbing toilets or whatever. Raw talent is of course found, however the 12 weeks of media, vocal and stage coaching that they got through is actually invaluble. Even Leona with her power-house of a voice couldn't have walked into Sony and got a record deal before The X Factor. They have been given a massive break by the show and should (and probably are) very greatful for every bit of success they get.

So I guess it could be argued it's hard on those who are then channeled into a set career as a result, such as Alexandra. Clearly King Cowell looked at her, along with little dollar signs, saw an RnB dance cross over artist and threw stuff like 'Broken Heels' at her. Having signed a record deal she didn't really have much creative control. A good thing? Perhaps. Maybe she knows jack all.

As a result I see the next Shane Warn in Alexandra. I actually think he is/was a HUGE talent. Go listen to some of his X Factor performances on youtube.. amazing stuff. He had a couple of good singles (as people would argue of Alexandra).. but never hit the heights of Leona. I do wonder if without her, we would have had this many series. She has proven the mould.. but part from her the other winers have actually had limited sucess.

So when an artist such as Diana Vickers comes along, it's really refreshing. I could be being a bit caught up in a bit of a clever PR stunt/scam.. but I think she breaks the mould a bit. I'm not trying to say she is edgy or indie.. or any of the other ridiculous things that I've heard people say she is trying to be. Because she is clearly not trying to be any of these things. She is trying to be an out and out pop star. She also appears to be doing this well.

I loved her on X Factor.. at the beginning anyway. Initially she sang some amazing stuff. Her version of 'With or Without you' was amazing, along with 'Man in the Mirror' off the live shows and her 'hallelujah" was the reason it was picked as the winners single. 'Call me' was also great.. I can remember all these off the top of my head. A mark of what a good performer she was. I can't do that for many others from X Factor, which I watch a little too religiously.

The stuff she sang set her apart from the other contestants, not only in the sense that they weren't our and our power ballards or dance numbers.. but in the genre of what she sang. They were more band type songs.. a little like Stacy Soloman did this series. She pulled out Keane and Colplay and quickly became my favourite in the competition.

However, much like Diana, she was quickly moved away from those songs and given the more pop, ballard and stage numbers. More typical of X Factor. Stacey came third and did well as a result, but Diana suffered more. Her version of 'Patience' was shocking. She well deserved to go when she did.

It is nice to see Diana back with an album penned by peoeple who fit quite well into the very vauge and awfully described rough category described alove. She has callaborated with a host of indie song writers and stars (the Gary Lightbody song didn't actually feature on the album in the end!). Im a big Lightspeed Champion fan, so I'm looking forward to that song in particular.

This, combined with the fact she had an award winning stint on the West End, gives Diana a credibility unheard of among X Factor alumni. Nobody else from X Factor has had such a potentially diferent, and interesting start, from my perspective. Sure some since have gained actual credibility (actually only really Will Young and maybe Leona in my eyes..)

Also although she is most definitely releasing poppy songs (not saying pop isn't credible), she had a whole level of "oh actually maybe she is a serious artist" about her.

This makes me happy! I have a big fat told you so for the people who I watched X Factor with almost 2 years ago that doubted her!

Although, I hope it's not a big media scam and actually Simon Cowell is pulling ths strings, she has no writing credits on the album, the song bombs at #10 and she sounds awful in the Live Lounge this week.

This song? Great. I've written too much of an essay already to really delve into this song. But it's great fun, catchy and well constructed.

I was a bit worried that her voice had been autotuned to hell and back on listening to it first. But 'tube some live performances.. they are great. her voice has clearly matured and sorted itself out a bit. Works really well live. Obviously she isn't going to fill an arena and belt out 'Once once once'.. but its lovely to heard it.

I whether you like Diana or not does come down to the voice. I of course love it. A lot of people don't!

Annoyingly. Fraser's review didn't really seem to give much of an opinion on the song.

Currently riding high in the iTunes and Amazon charts. I was a little flippant in my #1 prediction a while back, but Im gonna go out on a limb and say it will hit #1. If not at least top 3. I'm rarely right though, that was probably a jynx.

Looking forward to her live lounge anyway! Hope she doesn't pick an obvious (i.e Ellie Goulding or Owl City..) cover.

On an even more serious note , you of course know Diana's X FACTOR history well , and deserve commendation for hearing the appeal , individuality and character in Diana'a voice , at a very early stage.

Like you ,(and RCA Records ) , I could hear the magic that this beautiful young singer possessed , and her version of "With Or Without You " , was a deciding factor in the emergence of a record deal .
Her personality and willingness to learn , and her unconventional beauty , also proved alluring .

The single most , obvious reason why Once will be an outstanding commercial hit , is obviously the fantastic chorus , and the wonderful vocal delivery , which has the right mix of vulnerability and determination.

A wonderful , contrasting combination .

It simply is , as I and you , have said for months , a fantastic pop single , that has fantastic commercial potential .

I agree that Fraser's review , annoyingly ,doesn't really focus on the magic of a wonderful, well structured , emotive pop song , or the fact that he was listening to a massive commercial hit in waiting , that is going to appeal to hundreds of thousands of people , all around the country.

Everyone's perception is slightly different , so we won't shed any tears , if our beloved Fraser , puts his 3 stars for Diana , under a tainted cherry tree , covers them with Leona's Bleeding Love and tramples on them with Alexandra's Broken Heels !

We both know Once is a five star pop song .

Wake Up The Nation is my hope and tip to be number 1 , as it's a glorious 5 star album , with the Modfather on top form . Hey , even former Jam member , Bruce Foxton plays bass on a couple of tracks .
So magical to see them back together after so long , not talking.
It's a fantastic album , and my tip for the top spot .

In other news , there is an Internet campaign to get The Jam's Eton Rifles into the top ten for Election Day on May 6th .
It's a 5 star song , and worthy of the passion involved to get it there .

I could tell this was a biggie on first play about 3 - 4 months ago , and once Radio 1 playlisted it , it was a certain huge hit .

Sad Weller didn't make it , but he was beaten by the soundtrack to the forthcoming Iron Man 2 film ,by AC/DC , and that has seen fierce and telling promotion in the last week .

Yeah I absolutely love Train's Hey Soul Sister. Such a catchy, heartwarming record. It has so far peaked at #2 in Ireland before it's official release but scarily enough has only reached #51 in the UK. Shocking stuff and angry glare at Radio 1 for not playlist. Fraser, you better review it.

Radio 2 have had Hey, Soul Sister on their Playlist for a while, unfortunately it seems to be fact now that songs playlisted by Radio 2 never make the charts.

I listen to i102-104 when I can, much better than 2fm (especially with the sad passing of the brilliant Gerry Ryan). Train's Hey Soul Sister is such a feelgood song, love it! Everywhere else in the world seems to have embraced this song except the UK, what're you guys at over there. Come to think of it, now would be the perfect time for the song to become a hit in the UK as it's a perfect Summer song!

Random, we get radio 1 and 2 up here in the lakelands of fermanagh! And we get i102-104 as well, but as I'm studying in belfast and I only discovered it recently I haven't listened to it much. So it's good? :D
I don't listen to much radio, I just use spotify while I revise.

Knoxx, yeah I tried to get Radio 1 and 2 here but couldn't find them at all. Maybe because Fermanagh is technically part of the UK, ye can get it up there.

i102-104 plays lots of good music but I personally find that the presenters on the show spend far too much time talking and trying to be funny when they're not really funny at all. The shows that focus purely on music are good, the ones which have presenters talking rubbish for 2 hours while playing something like 6 songs annoy the Hell out of me. It's hugely popular with young people though so I must be one of the few who isn't completely happy with it.

Besides radio frustrates me as there is far too much emphasis on talking about things that have nothing to do with music and not enough emphasis on playing music. I use iTunes, music channels and the Internet for my music fix.
