Playlist 5 May

Mickey Bradley | 09:45 UK time, Friday, 6 May 2011

The Sex Pistols 'God Save The Queen' on the A&M label is reckoned to be the most valuable 45 rpm single in existence. It is worth £8,000 if you can find one. I can't so I'll play the b-side instead.
I was trying to remember how much the Sex Pistols received when they signed for A&M and I can't find the figure, otherwise I would make some smart connection between what they were paid and how many GSTQ singles you could buy for that, so I'll go on. There's a great live recording of 'Beginning To See The Light' from the Velvets, recorded on a cassette player in Max's Kansas City in the summer of 1970. It wasn't a good time for the band, as Lou Reed was deciding to call it a day, so it was a bit of good luck that Brigid Polk was there with her recorder. The microphone was held by Jim Carroll. His arm must have been very sore, which is probably why you can hear him on the record talking about getting a Pernod.
Paul Moore is presenting the programme next week , by the way. It will still be punk rock, although the house rules about nothing post 1987 may be relaxed for one week only.

Mickey, the Virgin issue of God Save the Queen had Did You No Wrong as a b-side. The A&M version had 'No Feeling' (note: not Feelings) which, as well as a slightly different title is also a slightly different mix to the album version which we all know and love.

The band got £75000 for their ten days at A&M. Added to the £40000 they got from EMI and it all was a nice little earner...........for Malcolm.

I tried to buy God Save The Queen when it came out, but supply problems thwarted me until I found a copy at Andy's Records in Cambridge marketplace. It's on 'West' Records and had Did You No Wrong on the flip. I love the classic blue cover with it's 'Punk Rock' flash across the corner in case you were in some doubt...

Harry - thank you very much for that. I either didn't know that , or forgot it , or forgot that I didn't know it. An excuse to play No Feelings, then ? Yes.
Ferg - West records ? Is this another chapter in the Great Rock n Roll Swindle that has remained a secret until now ? How much did Malcolm get out of them ? Must have been at least fifty pounds.

Mickey, you'll find 'No Feeling' on the first disc of the Sex Pistols Box Set. That's only if you don't have an A&M copy handy..........

The West Records release of GSTQ is of Turkish origin and although not in the same league of rarity as the UK A&M release it does go for a good few hundred pounds. Especially if you can find a copy that ain't got a tatty cover.

My GSTQ on West looks like it BORN tatty! But it's in one piece which is a bonus. Anyone who has punk singles in good condition didn't go to any of the parties I did!!!

Few hundred you say, Jason?? Nah, think I'll keep it!!
