Establishment opposition to the abolitionist movement
Description
How people in power used their influence against the abolition movement. Henry Dundas was Secretary of State for Britain and the Colonies as well as Lord of the Admiralty. He used his influence over MPs to slow the process of abolition through parliament.
Classroom Ideas
Investigate the progress of abolition legislation through parliament and the different groups that had an influence on it. Produce a spectrum of opinion for 1792, based on how pro or anti-slavery the British Parliament was at that time. Students could put themselves in the position of Henry Dundas and suggest justifications for his involvement and his insertion of the word âgraduallyâ into the abolition motion debated.
