Clocks and calendars

Description

Why do we need calendars and clocks? Sabrina is helped to work out the date and the time of her opening event by her friend Tempo. She begins to see the importance of knowing the date and how a calendar can help, and children give examples of their important dates. We learn the importance of telling the time accurately and relate this to a clock face. We find out how we need to tell the time in order to plan our lives, and we see a wide variety of types of clock all over the place. Sabrina makes a clock out of a bicycle wheel. This usefully provides a model of the clock face, clearly showing the equal spacing of the numerals.

Classroom Ideas

Children can go on a clock hunt and find different clocks around the school and at home. Take photographs of these and cut out pictures of clocks and watches out of magazines to make a display. Look at the pictures of analogue clocks. How many numbers are there? Which number is always at the top? What comes next? Make a large circle and stick the numbers one to 12 in the correct positions around the circle to make a clock face. Ask the children to find out what time they do certain activities, like get up or go to school. Children can make individual concertina books of one day, putting key events in their day in the right order.
