Prince Ludwig

Description

Prince Ludwig became king of Bavaria in 1864 at the age of 18. He ruled for twenty years, and had a huge passion for building castles. His most extravagant castle was Neuschwanstein, near the town of FĂŒssen. This expensive passion caused his ministers to declare him insane, and he was locked up. However, one day after a walk with his physician, both men were found dead in a nearby lake. The case remains a mystery to this day - was it murder or suicide?

Classroom Ideas

Students could research Ludwig’s other castles or the different kingdoms (eg Bavaria, Prussia) which were unified in 1871 to create Germany. A reading comprehension about Ludwig could be created by providing a gap fill text in German which students have to complete using words from a given list. This could be differentiated by including a version with more words than required for some students.
