Estimating and calculating distance

Description

Captain Calamity estimates and measures distance in kilometres and estimates the number of sheep in a field to successfully rescue Princess Amber. Princess Amber is held prisoner by the Evil Ruler. Captain Calamity can only rescue her by completing a quest. This quest involves bringing back a tail feather from the Golden Phoenix. Progress of the distance travelled is checked along the way, both as estimates and as actual measurements calculated by the Tripmeter. From this Captain Calamity can work out how far he has travelled and how far he still has to go. As he gets closer to finding the Golden Phoenix, he also has to estimate the number of sheep in a field.

Classroom Ideas

Students could use several piles of beans of different sizes. Students could be told the number of beans in each pile but asked to guess which number describes which pile. In other words, they will need to estimate which piles contain which number of beans.
