Choosing a title
Once you have chosen a topic – such as proportional representation – you need to decide on a title. Most teachers will suggest there are three ways of approaching choosing a title:
- a question that your assignment then tries to answer – such as Should First Past the Post be replaced by a form of proportional representation?
- a hypothesis about an issue that you think might be true and the purpose of your assignment is to test if the hypothesis is true or not
- a simple heading – such as Electoral Systems in Scotland
Options
Next you need options for your assignment. Ideally you will provide three possible options to choose from to answer your question, solve your hypothesis, or deal with your heading. If you only have two options your maximum mark will be 29 out of 30 while three could get you 30.
Advice: A question type title often leads you to a "for or against" options answer which is only two options so be aware of that before you choose.
Examples of options would be:
Question: Should First Past the Post be replaced by a form of proportional representation?
- Option 1: Yes
- Option 2: No
Hypothesis: AMS is a much fairer system of election than FPTP.
- Option 1: How fair is AMS?
- Option 2: How fair is FPTP?
- Option 3: Is there a fairer system?
Heading: Electoral Systems in Scotland.
- Option 1: FPTP
- Option 2: AMS
- Option 3: STV
