Responsible production and consumption in Scotland

Addressing issues of production and consumption is not just about large scale industry. It's about the resources that we all use.

In 2017, the UK’s was estimated as 1.2 billion tonnes, equivalent to 18.5 metric ton per person. That compares to just 2 metric tons per person in low-income countries.

To live sustainably we need to consume less and produce less waste.

There are already many exciting community projects across Scotland that are helping ensure the things we use don't end up in landfill sites. Watch this video to find out more about one of them.

The most useful ways we can help in making Scotland a more responsible consumer is through the the three Rs:

  • Reduce - Think before you buy. Cut down on things that you don't really want or need.
  • Reuse - Avoid single-use products. Try and make do with what you have rather than replacing it.
  • Recycle - If you have finished with something, dispose of it responsibly so that it can be used for something else.
