UN Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations have issued 17 ambitious goals to try and build a better, fairer, and more sustainable future for the world.

Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to ensure everyone in the world has access to safe, clean water and has adequate sanitation.

There are many parts of the world where access to safe drinking water is difficult and poor sanitation can cause illness and disease.

Climate change and water supply

Climate change is making problems worse:

• Climate change is linked to more extreme weather events, including droughts and floods.
• More places will experience water stress.
• Higher temperatures can help some dangerous pathogens to multiply in fresh water
• Rising sea levels will cause some fresh water supplies to become salty and undrinkable without treatment.

Global water issue facts

• Globally, 3 in 10 people lack access to safely managed drinking water services
• 2.4 billion people lack access to basic sanitation services such as toilets
• Each day, nearly 1,000 children die due to preventable water and sanitation-related diarrhea diseases
