Colour or black and white?

In the past, technology meant that photographs were black and white. Many people still choose to work in black and white because it can produce different effects to colour photography.

What are the strengths of using black and white photography?

Black and white images tend to show pattern, texture, shape and form more clearly and to draw attention to lighting.

Experimenting with black and white photography can be a useful way of concentrating on composition.

How to take black and white photos:

  • On a digital camera, you can either select this in the camera's settings beforehand or make your images black and white after they have been taken, using image editing software.
  • On a traditional film camera, you need to use specific black and white film.
