The impact of Tim Minchin and Matilda

Matilda has become one of the most popular and successful musicals of the last 20 years. It has won 85 international awards including seven Olivier Awards and five Tony Awards, and has been performed in over 50 cities worldwide.

Tim Minchin, lyricist and composer, confirmed in 2013 that there are plans for a film version of the musical, written and produced by the same team that created the stage version.

The great success of Matilda led to further collaboration between Minchin and three other members of the Matilda team, including director Matthew Warchus, to produce Groundhog Day the musical. Groundhog Day was also a success as it was nominated for seven Tony Awards after its transfer to in 2017.
