'[Source]' How far do you agree? (20 marks)

This type of question requires you to consider the statement at hand and asks you how far you agree with the point of view, you can agree completely, a little bit or not at all.

Example:

In an article for ±«Óătv iWonder, the historian Michael Wood argues that the 17th century idea of ‘the Norman Yoke’ is a genuine folk tradition handed down among the English which said that the Norman Conquest was a traumatic event that started a century of dispossession, oppression and violence. How far do you agree with this view?

Tips:

  1. Select a total of four points altogether you wish to make (these can be agreeing, disagreeing or both).
  2. Explain each point in detail using your own knowledge of explicit events, factors or people to support your point.
  3. Reach an overall judgement which shows clearly why you agree or disagree.

Note down as many ideas as you can, these might include things like the feudal system, changes in law and order, castle building, the Harrying of the North to show ‘the Norman Yoke’ and challenge Wood's view.

Remember, this question gives you a choice of questions to answer. Read them both through carefully before choosing - perhaps jot down some ideas and underline key words while you read through them as well. This will mean that you choose the question which is right for you and you can feel more confident in answering it.

You want to spend around 25 minutes on this question, split your time up wisely in planning your answer and on writing your answer.
