This question will always focus on your ability to identify an interpretation and how the creator has made this view point clear.

Example:

Interpretation A - An extract from the script of The Normans, a ����tv television series, 2010.

‘The Normans were among the greatest church builders in Europe. Alongside hundreds of castles, they built abbeys and cathedrals on a scale never seen before in England. In Normandy, they'd used them to proclaim their fervent Christianity, wealth and power. Now they were stamping the same monumental style over their newly conquered territory.

They were imposing sights and also a permanent reminder to the Anglo-Saxons that they were a conquered people.’

In interpretation A the historian Robert Bartlett argues that cathedral building was used to control the Anglo-Saxons. Identify and explain one way in which he does this.

Tips:

1. Select an element of language or detail from the interpretation.
2. Explain the meaning of this in relation to the focus of the question.
3. Add further detail from the interpretation to further strengthen your point.

Identify some language or detail which shows control, take a look at the highlighted words and sections, how could you use these to explain ‘control’? If you’re spending more than four or five minutes on this question, then you are writing too much!
