Using the stage

Upstaging

Upstaging - One actor stands 'upstage' in front of the other on stage

If someone stands upstage of you then they’ll be dominant. This is because you’ll have to look away from the audience to connect with them. Don’t let that happen by accident. If someone is upstage centre and almost everyone onstage is looking at them, it must be deliberate, eg when they’re a king being crowned.

Crossing

Crossing - Dotted line shows an actor 'crossing the stage' diagonally

If you walk across the area to a significantly new position you cross the stage.

Clearing

Two actors on stage - one blocking the other from the audience’s view

When you stop, make sure you’re not blocking someone, especially someone important, from the audience’s view.
