With all eyes on Newport, Raise Your Game talks to the Chief Executive of Ryder Cup Wales 2010, Rob Holt, about inspiring a new generation of golf stars.

Legacy for the young

Golf Development Wales was set up as a joint initiative with Ryder Cup Wales, The Sports Council for Wales and the Golf Union of Wales to ensure that there is that legacy in terms of participation.

There are 41 projects around Wales aimed at making golf accessible to young people. We want to get young people interested in golf and take them right the way through the system so that we can inspire the same success as we have had with players such as Rhys Davies, Becky Brewerton and Rhian Wyn Thomas.

Learn from the best

The best juniors get the opportunity to play alongside top senior players in our clinics and pro-ams. They learn so much from each other and it's that link between the senior players and the juniors which is a vital part of the future of our sport.

Going forward

It takes a long time to change stereotypes, however, I believe the old image of golf has changed in recent years. We've got a lot of young people coming into the game and that is the life blood of the sport going forward.

Chip in

There's a huge range of career opportunities linked to golf and not all of them involve swinging a club. In terms of a golf tournament or a golf club, they employ 14 to 16 green keepers and there are also people responsible for staging the event such as catering staff, referees and administrators. Many of the skills that you learn from golf such as discipline, self-control, and propriety are all needed to progress in a career and we can give you an opportunity to learn.
