1980: Mugabe to lead independent Zimbabwe

Nationalist leader Robert Mugabe wins a sweeping election victory to become Zimbabwe's first black prime minister.

Mr Mugabe’s party, Zanu (PF), won by a majority of 57 out of 80 seats.

The man labelled a terrorist Marxist had fought a lengthy guerrilla war against the white minority government.
