1978: Naomi James breaks world sailing record

Naomi James breaks the solo round-the-world sailing record on 8 June 1978.

She is the first woman to sail single-handedly around the globe via Cape Horn at the southern tip of South America, known as the “clipper route”.

She completes her journey in Dartmouth after 272 days at sea, breaking the previous record by two days.
